Jason was a year older than Kat, but she didn't mind. He was always so nice to her. Kat was twelve, but she could still remember her ninth birthday. The surfboard still sat up in her room above her closet. Sometimes, she would hold it, and admire it. Kat longed to use it again. She had only been to the beach once since she received the gift. 'But,' Kat thought to herself, 'my parents hate the beach' her door opened, and the maid, Marsha, walked in. "Katrina," she said,"your mother and father need you." "Yep" Kat hopped up. She hated her full name. 'Katrina, Gabriella, Smith.' Boring! Kat entered her family meeting room, and sat down. "Honey," her dad started, "we found someone we would like to work with, but, she lives far away." Kat nodded, a bit nervous."so, we, you, your mother and I, need to take a trip, to meet her. She lives in" her dad paused "in San Diego, California." Kat's jaw dropped. " is - is - are you kidding?" Kat said, stunned. "No honey, we leave this Sunday, and come back next Saturday." Her mom said gently. "Is that okay with you?" "OKAY? ITS MORE THAN OKAY!! IM GOING TO SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA!!" She looked at her parents. "can I bring my surf board, so u can surf?" Her mom nodded "yay! I get to surf in real life! Wahoo!" Kat ran into her room, and grabbed her 'real life' surfboard off of the wall. She set it Down on her bed and danced around. "Wait a minute" Kat stopped. "I have to tell Jase!" As soon as the words were out of her mouth, Jason strolled in. "JASON!" Kat screamed, as she embraced her best friend. "I'm going to California, and I'm gonna surf!!" "I know." "You do?" "Yep" Jason said, as he showed her a board. "No way!" Kat grinned. "Your coming too?" "Yep" "yay!" Kat spun around the room. "Your welcome." Jase said, like he had done something. Kat looked over "what?" Jason smiled. "I introduced your parents the the women they want to work with." "OMG Jase, you are the best!" And she continued her dancing.

Kat sighed as she stood on the beach, looking out into the water. She felt the warm sand between her toes. "Feel good to be back?" Jase asked "ya" Kat answered, thinking back to the last time she had been to the beach. She was ten. The time before that, it was present for her eight birthday (to make up for forgetting her seventh) and now, as a present from Jase, for no reason at all. Kat stared into the distance. A pack of dolphins chased a wave in the distance. Jason broke her gaze. "Race you to the next big wave!" He called "just try!" Kat called back and the two ran towards the water. They had only been at the beach for four days, and Kat had already mastered surfing. The two threw their boards into the water, and paddled out. Kat looked up. A giant wave came rushing toward her. She used all of her strength to push up. She stood fearlessly on her board, but this time, she didn't fall. Kat rode the wave, up, up, and up. She could feel the salt of the water, she could taste it. It was wam and beautiful. 'I never want to leave!' She thought. Kat and Jase rode the waves until dinner, and dinner was amazing! The cook had prepared cheese burgers for the friends. The two sat down. "Um, Marsha?" Kat asked "where are my parents?" "They are meeting up with Viola Marshetie, she is the home designer your parents want to work with." "oh" Kat said plainly. her parents were renovators, and were searching for a designer to work with. Kat took a huge bite into her cheese burger. It wasn't hot, but it wasn't cold either. "This is the best food I've had in forever!" Kat said, with a mouthful of meat and cheese. She swallowed and Jase elbowed her in the arm. She turned and gave Jase a cute, devious, smirk.
After dinner, Kat got into pjs, her comfortable blue pajama shorts, and a pink shirt that said, "someone who loves me, thinks I'm a surfer girl - San Diego" Kat looked at herself in the mirror, and pulled her wavy brown hair into loose piggy tails. She let her bangs hang down. Kat turned and headed into her room, well, temporary room. It was small, but allowed Kat to have her own build in bathroom. The bed was a wooden framed queen, and the sheets were white with palm trees on them. She had her own small dresser against one wall. The room was tan, with a walk in closet in one corner. The wall facing the ocean was technically a window with a ledge. Two pulled back white curtains reviled a beautiful sunset from the window. Kat sighed and plopped down on her bed."Katrina?" Marsha was at Kat's door. It was about eight o'clock on the morning. Kat, startled, sprung out of bed and landed on the floor with a thump. "Katrina! Are you hurt?" "No, no, no! I'm, it's, that's how I usually get out of beach. I mean bed." She yawned and rubbed her head. It hurt from when she fell. "What is it Jase?" She called. "um, Katrina, I'm Marsha." "Ya ya same thing." "Your parents have something to tell us!" Marsha said. "I'll be out in a surf. I mean second!" Kat slowly began to wake up and get dressed.
In the main room, she found Jason, Marsha, her mom and dad, and a tall, thin, black haired, women. "Kat, honey, this is Viola, our new co - worker!" "Hi" Kat said, but turned her attention towards a brown, house shaped, bird cage. "This," her dad said,"is your new parakeet!" Kat hustled over the cage. Inside was an adorable baby parakeet. She was mostly turquoise. The bird chirped. "I think she likes you!" Jase said. Kat looked at her parents "thank you!" She said and gazed at the budgie again.🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
The bird was named Sandy, after the sandy beach. Sandy was sweet, and Kat loved her a lot, but it was almost time to leave, and the bird and no were to go. "Jase," Kat asked, "what will I do with Sandy? I can't take her on the plane." The two sat down on the beach together "Hey guys!" A bratty voice came from behind them. They turned to see Becky trotting down the beach, as if on a runway. She was wearing jean short - shorts, and a blue bikini top. Kat was wearing her purple surf shorts and her blue and black rash guard. Becky sat herself in between Kat and Jase. "Wats up Jase?" She turned to Kat. "Katrina" she turned back to Jase. Jason and Becky were the same age, and Kat HATED how she talked to him. "So, Jase, wanna surf?" Becky asked. "When did you learn how to surf?" Kat asked, suspiciously. "When I moved here, duh!" Becky snapped "and a little birdie told me that Jason was moving here too!" Becky was right. Jase wasn't coming back with Kat. He was staying with his grandma. "Hey!" Kat had an idea. "Maybe you can take care of Sandy, Jase!" "Sandy? What kind of a name is sandy?" Becky snarled. "Katrina! Jason!" Marsha called. "Got to go!" Kat told Becky. She grabbed Jase on the arm and raced inside.
