Kat was glad to have a friend like Jase. But she was also glad that during their argument, she had met two new friends. There was a championship comp the next week, and Kat had her eye on the prize. If she won, not only would she clear her name from "#worstwipouts" and get back at Becky, she would also be accepted in the San Diego surf club. This comp happens once a year, and this was Kat's chance. The next day brought a huge storm, as Kat had guessed, so she she spent the day watching videos of past surfers winning the spot in the surf club with Alex. Mara was doing family photos, so Alex hung out with Kat. "I wish I could compete." Alex admitted. "I'd love to teach you!" Kat said, but she pointed out that the weather was not going to let her. The two had fun, even though the storm kept them in all day. After a while, Marsha knocked on Kat's door. "You have a friend outside" she said. "Oh! It must be Mara!" Kat jumped up to answer the door. "Hi Mar..." Kat stopped. This wasn't Mara. It was Becky. Kat looked around to make sure none of her minions were with her. "Hey Kitty Kat!" Becky said. "Sorry Beck, I'm busy." Kat started. "Um Kat." Becky got quite and shy. Kat looked at her. Becky took a deep breath and said, "KatimsorryfordoingthattoyouitwaswrongJaseisyourfriendandishouldnthavemadeAndygrabyou." She turned and slammed the door in Kat's face. Kat was stunned, but then she laughed! Becky's parents had found out about the incident at the shack, and made her apologize! Kat tried to replay what Becky had said. 'Kat I'm sorry for doing that to you it was wrong Jase is your friend and I shouldn't have made Andy grab you.' She thought. 'Andy must be the name of the guy who grabbed my arm!' Kat couldn't wait to tell Jase! She went into her bedroom to tell Alex. When she was done, Alex was on the floor laughing at the thought of Becky getting in trouble. "Call Jase!" She said, in between bursts of laughter. "He has to know!" Kat grabbed her phone and called Jase. He laughed so hard, he couldn't breathe for about five minutes. Then his doorbell rang. "It's Becky!" He told Kat. "Im putting you on speaker so you can hear this!" Jase answered the door. "Hi Becky." He said "what's up?"
"Hi Jase." She said sadly "aw, whats wrong? You miss me?" Kat held her breath. She didn't want Becky to hear her and Alex laughing through the phone. "I came to apologize" Becky said. "Ok then. Do it." Becky said exactly what she said to Kat, but as she turned to leave, Jase grabbed her. "Did little Becky get in trouble?" He asked. Becky looked at him. "I wish you would go out with me again." She said. "Why?" Jase asked. "Is it because popular girl wants popular boy? Or is it because your gang abandoned you?" Kat stuffed her head in a pillow to muffle her laughter. "Why are you friends with Kat, but hate me?" "Because Kat's nice." It seemed like a simple equation. Your nice, I'm nice. "You don't think I'm nice?" Alex couldn't hold it any longer. The thought Becky thinking she is nice was too much. She laughed so loud, that Jase's parents came in to ask what was going on. Alex was crying she was laughing so hard. Jase dropped the act and burst into a fit of laughter. Kat's pillow wasn't thick enough to muffle anymore, and the three had red faces from lack of air. Becky clenched her teeth. Then, she yelled at the top of her lungs, "KATRINA GABRIELA SMITH I WILL GET YOU!" She slammed the door and stomped out of Jase's house. The three paused, then continued laughing even harder! "That was hilarious!" Alex yelled to Jase through the phone. Kat tried to calm herself down, but Jase repeated Becky's words in a tone that was so funny, Kat ran to another room before he could finish, to keep from laughing even harder. The next day was beautiful. The sky was clear, and it was warm out. Mara was back from the photo shoot, and met up with Kat and Alex the next day. Kat told Mara that Alex wanted to learn how to compete, and Mara loved the idea. The girls rode the waves all day, and they taught Alex some tips. "Ok Kat." Mara started. "Now, it's time to train you." Kat was confused. "The championship comp is different. You go out at the same time as your competition, and you need to get the wave first. They give you a colored rash guard and they identify you by that color." Kat was up for the challenge, and wanted to learn as much as she could. She trained hard for the rest of the week. Then finally, the day came. Kat got out of bed with butterfly's in her stomach. She grabbed her surfboard that Jase had giver her off the wall, and waxed it. She got in her favorite board shorts and bikini top, and threw a t-shirt over it. She sat in her bed and tried to calm herself down. Mara was out of town for the week, but she promised to watch Kat on the surf channel. Jase and Alex came over to give her a pep talk. They helped, but not much. There was one thing Jase could do. He felt he had to calm her down. She needed to laugh. Jase looked at her seriously and said. "Katrina Gabriela smith I will get you" in his best girly voice. Kat and Alex burst into another fit of laughter, and Kat felt those butterflies fly away. Kat ate a banana and headed out with her friends by her side. The comp didn't start until noon, and it was eleven. Kat checked in with the judges and went to set up camp with Alex. Jase had gone to grab something to drink, there was a stand of sodas. Kat just wanted water. It was now eleven thirty, and the first competitors were getting ready. Kat was third. She had no idea who she was competing against, but it didn't worry her. She watched the the first two get ready to go. A judge came up and handed her a purple and black rash guard and she slipped it on. The other color was yellow. The first two rounds went by quickly, and Kat felt the butterflies come back. The judge called her name. She stepped up to the water. The judge called her competitors name. "Yellow competitor is..." Kat held her breath.
