Siobhan's p.o.v
Heels clink against marble floors as I glide down halls and past the doors leading into the conference arena. I am so utterly enthralled by the topic of discussion we shall hold today that I simply cannot help the ghost of a smile that tags upon my lips despite the now-mildly aching, thoroughly-stitched up slash of my cheek. Damn you, Subject 3033. I will make it a personal obligation to see that you suffer a sanction for this iniquity, you have my word.
The panel of scientists rise in unison upon my entrance into the arena and once I am stood at the very head of the lengthy cypress-wood table, they all take their respective seats.
"Good morning. I've assembled all of you here as I have been pondering over Project Xena for a hot minute."
"So, what do you suggest we do with this virus, Miss Siobhan?" One of the members -a bald man in his sixtees- inquires."Simple. We release the virus, consume portion of the antivirus and store away the remaining portion for future synthesis and multiplicity."
The panel breaks into low whispers, mumbles incoherent amongst themselves. That is until one person voices their concern."But Miss Siobhan, don't you think we'd be acting rashly...against all of humanity? We already synthesized the virus as per your command. What are your intentions. I mean, we have a right as the manufactures to understand your motives, no?"
More persons affirm the doctor's sentiments, they whisper their agreements and look upon me in perplexity.
"Simple. The world as we know it is now overpopulated. Eight and a half billion is the world's total population. Therefore, in releasing the virus we'd be doing earth justice.""Miss Siobhan, we held your hand when you first introduced the idea of robotic children, held your hand when you introduced the idea of cloning man and creating the perfect set of humans. You sought to populate the earth. Now, now you wish to terminate innocent human beings?"
My eyes meet and lock with those of speaker and for a minute, I am left to ponder and come upon solid conclusion.
"Yes, you would be correct. Now, are you for or against me, Mrs Allegra?"Tilting head ever so slightly, I eye her. Yes, I clearly paint out the storm that brews at the front of her mind, the wheels that turn behind that burning gaze of hers.
"Forgive me, madam. But for once, I am not aboard with this plan. We have no right to play the role of Sovereign Being as we are just as much human as they are."Exactly as I'd thought she'd say.
"Mhm. Fine," I speak coolly, nod head in feigned agreement.
Reaching for pen sat inside pen holder atop the table, I press the cap and observe -without remorse- as her lifeless upper body slams into softness of finely-polished table.I toss pen back into holder, push strands of hairs behind my right ear, lean over with palms pressing flat upon table. One scientist cups her mouth in shock. Another gasps ever so dramatically whilst the rest simply gaze upon me with feigned tranquility.
No is never a suitable answer.
"Your children, your families will receive protection. They will have the privilege of consuming the antivirus through injection."
The arena remains deathly silent, eerily quiet as each individual stares upon me like I just grew myself a second nose.
"When will...when will we be releasing the virus?"The question brings a sadistic smile to my face as my vision trails to look to the source of the query.
"Today and in the next six hours. When time is nigh, you will load the electric drones with the test tubes and evenly distribute the virus."
"And meanwhile? What will we be doing?""We will be administering the antivirus amongst ourselves. The remaining portion you will store safely in test tubes, fill them in a single briefcase and hand over the briefcase to me. I'll take it from there. Any more questions?"
My eyes travel to my left, rake to my right.
"Fine then. Doctor Kapono, instruct for the bringing in of the antivirus. We best begin the procedure now..."**************
Subject 3033's p.o.v
'Your mother is dead...a sanction for your transgressions...'
My eyes flutter open, they water, they sting so horridly as they adjust to glowering illuminations. A groan so low tumbles past my chapped lips as the agony ripples and stabs at my lower back and limbs. My left wrist is shackled to the bed whilst a nurse works to braid my hairs in the silentness of white chamber. My back is pressed to the headboard of bed, my head hanging lowly to my chest, my legs spread out, my muscles aching and tensed.
They murdered Enya. They killed my mother. The only woman who truly granted me affections unfathomable.
They will pay. Siobhan will pay with her very own life even if it kills me. My chest constricts so terribly, the lump continues to stick to the walls of my throat, the pang clings to my heart like a blood-sucking leech at the torment of this loss I experience.Dead, lifeless, soul ripped from body, gone.
I work to blink away the little wells that somewhat blind my vision. A strangled sob leaves my throat. I rest the back of my head into headboard, stare upon the empty ceilings of an opal white hue, sniff.
"I am glad you are now awake," woman's voice tickles my ears.
"Nurse, what time is it?" I inquire lowly, meekly."Only four fifty five in the eve. I brought you something to eat."
"I do not need food. Being cooped up in this chamber is making me gradually lose touch with my sanity. Help me, please," I turn head to face upon her, my eyes training upon hers and silently pleading. The titanium barriers glide open and the first guard from earlier this morning treads right in -gamma-ray gun clutched firmly in both arms. He nods to the nurse who nods back then turns to face upon me only for the briefest of moments. They seek to conceal a truth from me I see.
Guard excuses himself, exits the chamber entirely as doors glide shut behind him. All is quiet for short moments. That is until hastily, the nurse scribbles something down on paper, rests it upon bedside table. She leaves briskly, her lengthy skirts flying all about her feet. I take hold of the little paper, read it silently, exhale a sharp breath at the revelation I come upon.
I have left you both your dagger and a hair pin beneath the sheets on your left side, right beneath the heel of your foot. Use it to free yourself, escape and carry with you a gas mask. The code to unlock your doors is 2946. They plan something ungodly...
Could it be? The kiss of liberty? The sensual touch of freedom? Handed to me on a silver platter? With strain, tentatively, I reach for the space beneath my foot, take hold of the dagger and a little hair pin -silver jewelry with tiny glimmering emeralds. I pull on it using my front teeth, pick the lock of the shackles with a single palm. Clink comes that sweetly sound. It's as though I dream wide awake. I nearly sob, nearly.
I look to my now-freed wrist. Sore, purpled, swollen and unsightly. Still better than being bound. Yet, an alarm blares at the back of my mind. Yes, something is most certainly about to transpire if it hasn't already. In the past few months, I'd overheard a conversation between two scientists that had come to examine me in my sleep. They'd spoken of a new virus they'd been ordered to synthesize by Siobhan. Might it be that they now seek to unleash this new evil?
I do not let myself ponder too deeply. Instead, I leap off bed in the loose hospital garment, grab my dagger, make my way cautiously towards the doors. Pressing code, the barriers glide open to reveal not a single soul in the halls. Peculiar. Still, I tread carefully down dim halls, tread further down darkly corridors ensuring to keep to the shadows of the walls within the lab. I need to get to the gear store if I am to make it out of this place alive. Perhaps the light at the end of the tunnel still flickers. Perhaps my chance at salvation still lives.
Oh, freedom, how I yearn to finally embrace you...
