I see Abigail's cheeks flush when she sees me looking at her. She quickly turns to grab the present off the counter next to her and then she walks away into the living room. I can't take my eyes off of her the entire time. God, she looks good. Better than good, she looks fucking amazing.
I've missed her. More than I thought possible. It's been a long few months. I'm still staring at Abby when suddenly I feel Amelia being taken out of my hands. I look over and Emma's there. She gives me a big smile.
"I've got her. Go say hi."
I nod and let go of the baby before I walk over to Abby. She has her back to me while she looks at some recent pictures of Amelia that are displayed on a shelf.
"Hey."
I see her tense up for a second before she takes a big breath and releases it. She slowly turns and I see her up close for the first time in months and I want nothing more than to pull her against me and show her just how much I've missed her. But I can't. That's not who we are anymore.
"Hey." She gives me a shy smile before she turns back to the pictures. "These are really good. Do you know who took them?"
I keep my eyes on her as I answer.
"I did."
She quickly turns to look at me with a look of suprise on her face.
"Really?" I just nod in response. "Andrew, these are incredible."
I look back at the pictures. There are some of Amelia playing on a blanket in the backyard. She's all smiles and chubby cheeks. There's also some candid shots of, Leo, Emma and Amelia as a family. I took them at Thanksgiving when we were fortunate enough to have a somewhat nice day here in Cincinnati. We were able to hang around outside for a bit without freezing to death.
"I learned a few things while we were together."
"I'll say. You must of really been paying attention."
"I paid attention to everything you did Abigail."
"Andrew-"
"Hey, little man." I reach down and pick up Wyatt, who just recently learned to walk and who's still a little wobbly. Noah comes up to us, he's clearly been trailing Wyatt to make sure he stays out of trouble.
"Sorry about that. He wanted his Uncle. Hey, Abby." He goes in for a hug, which she returns with a smile on her face. "It's good to see you. We've missed you."
"I've missed you guys too." She turns her attention to Wyatt who's currently trying to pull my ear off. "Hello, handsome. How are you?"
He turns shy all of the sudden and lays his head on my chest as he gives her a shy little smile. I whisper against his ear.
"Wyatt, you remember Abby. Can you say hi?"
He gives her a little wave and then turns his head away from her as he wraps his arms around my neck and holds on tight.
I give a little chuckle at his shyness but it quickly fades when I look back at Abby. She has tears in her eyes and then she's gone.
"Shit."
I hand Wyatt to Noah and go after her. I see here at the top of the stairs and when I make it up there I eventually find her in Amelia's room standing over the empty crib.
"Abigail, are you okay." She doesn't answer so I walk closer. "Abby, look at me, please."
She doesn't move and after a minute I'm about to speak again when she slowly turns to look at me and my heart breaks when she does. She has tears streaming down her face and I see so much pain in her eyes. I take a step closer and go to reach for her but she suprises me by speaking.
"That was supposed to be us. The family in the photos you took. Us standing in the middle of a party with our daughters arms wrapped around your neck. It was supposed to be us."
"Honey, I know. I know it was. It still can be."
I shouldn't of said it. I know I shouldn't have. I promised myself I wasn't going to. I promised myself that if we were to ever make this work it had to be her choice, that she would have to make the first move towards fixing us.
But dammit, every time I look at her she draws me in and I can't help it. I can't help wanting to make everything right for her.
"Andrew, please don't. Not today. I can't go through all of this again with you."
"Go through what? The fact that we both love each other but yet for some reason you won't let us be together?" She starts crying harder but for some reason I keep going. "Or go over the fact that you broke my heart when you ran away without so much as word to me."
"I wrote you a note, Andrew, I didn't leave without a word."
"I never read it."
She looks at me in suprise.
"What? What do you mean you never read it?"
"Why the fuck would I? Clearly, whatever you had to say wasn't that important, otherwise, you would of said it to my fucking face."
"Andrew," The tears start falling harder. "I'm sorry. God, am I sorry for how I handled things but that doesn't change the fact that I was right and that we just weren't going to work."
"You know what, Abigail? I don't except your apology and I sure as hell don't except your bullshit excuse as to why we aren't together." I close the distance between us. "And when you decide to put on your big girls panties and own up to the fact that we're made for each other you know where to find me." I lean down and kiss her on the cheek before whispering in her ear. "And when you do I'll gladly rip those same panties right off of you and show you just how fucking made for each other we really are."
