Chapter 1: Logan

Song of chapter: Eye of the Tiger by Survivor

I stand in the little circle my team has made, waiting for the next break so I can take the ball and finally give us the Championship we all deserve. My heart is pounding in my chest and my hands are numb, we only have thirty seconds left and we are one touchdown away from victory. We will win this. I promised my team we would. It would break my heart to lose. I have been working so hard my entire life to get where I am. Ever since I could remember I have been playing ball, whether it was with my father, my uncles, anyone who could play would teach me.

"Hey, Logan, it's time," I'm snapped out of my thoughts as my best friend, Michael, pats me on my shoulder indicating it was time to finish this. I run to the field to finish the game.

Thirty seconds. Thirty seconds on the clock until we could beat Lakeside High School and get that Championship Trophy home to our school Wilsonville High School. "1, 2, 3, HUT!" I yell out to the field. I catch the ball and throw to to someone on the field. He catches it and runs.

My heart is continuously pumping from running and how badly I want to win the Championship. I run towards the our end of the field and motion the player with the ball to pass it to me. He sees me and passes. I catch it was ease and run like lighting. I chuck the ball to our goalie. The ball fly's in our goalie. I throw my hands in the air and yell out, "VICTORY!"

The crowd is going crazy. I can't believe we did it. We won the Championship! Two players came to my side, picked me up, and placed me on their shoulders. The rest of the team circled around us. We were shouting in victory. "PARTY AT MY HOUSE!"  I shout to everyone. They yell louder and shout it to the crowd! I jump down and look for my parents. I find my two year old brother running towards me. "Jacob!" I shout and pick him up. "Did you enjoy the game?" I ask him

"Yeah! You did good!" he says. I smile wider and give him a hug. I love my brother to death! He giggles and I put him down. My mom, who is pregnant, and dad were in front of me. The brought me in a group hug telling me I did a good job.

Dad was the first one to pull away and asks, "Are you still having that party at our house?" I nod my head. "Alright. Everyone leaves before midnight okay? You do have school tomorrow."

"Alright dad!" I say. Suddenly, I hear Michael yell out my name. "Well, I gotta go. I'll see you later guys." I give my parents and Jacob one last hug and run over to Michael to start the party.

                                                           +++

        "This party is great man!"

"Logan, you are the best, dude."

        "Congrats on winning the Championship!"

All of the comments were being said to be when I opened the door, when I said hi to someone, or some random person will run over and say to me. This has to be the best party I have ever thrown. I walk into the kitchen to see Michael and his girlfriend, Emma, with some red headed girl. I walked over to them and placed my hand on Michael's shoulder. "What's up, man?" I ask him. He sees me and smiles.

"Nothing much. Just talking," Michael says.

"Hello, Emma," I greet her and give her a hug.

"Logan, you did so good today! I knew we were going to win," Emma said. She pulled away from the hug. "I want you to meet my friend, Valerie. She moved here from Atlanta. She did live here when we were in middle school. Then, she moved, and now she is back here!" I lift my hand for here to shake.

"Nice to meet you Valerie," I say. She shakes my hand and smiles a beautiful smile.

"Nice to meet you too, Logan," she says.

"You have a strange accent. Where are you from?" I ask while I put my hands in my pockets.

"Oh, it's not an accent. I'm deaf, but I can read your lips," she says.

I am stunned. "I'm so sorry," I apologized.

"It's okay. You didn't know," she says.

"Well, Emma and I are going to go dance. We will leave you guys to talk!" Michael says, taking Emma's hand to the living room. I look back at Valerie.

"You want to talk outside, Valerie?" I ask. I point out to my backyard. She turns around and looks back at me.

"Sure!" she smiles. I smile back. I open the door for her to let her outside. She walks out and I follow right behind her. I quickly go over to the swing set I had and sat on one of the swings. She does the same right next to me.

"So, what brings you here to Oregon?" I ask.

"My mom is an Au pair and travels a lot. We moved to Atlanta for a couple of job offerings, but none of them worked out. We moved back here, so my mom got her old job back here," she says.

"What about your dad?" I ask curiously.

"My dad actually died in a car crash three years ago," she says sadly.

"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I need to filter my words," I say.

"No no, you're totally fine! You were curious. I would probaly have done the same thing if you said what I said," she says. I smile at her. She is really different from other girls.

"Do you think we could be friends?" I ask hopefully.

"Yes, Logan, we definetly can be friends!" she smiles and gives out a giggle. I smile wider.

"Here," I say while take out my phone and give it to her. "Put your number in here so we can text eachother, and maybe we can hang out some time!" She quickly puts her contact in and gives me back my phone. "Sweet."

"Um, I should probably text my mom to pick me up," she stands up. "I'll text you later, Logan?" she asks why walking backwards towards the door.

        "Definetly," I reply.

        "Bye, Logan!"

I wave goodbye and she heads out the door.

Since then, I shouldn't stop thinking of her.
