Chapter 3

Chapter 3: A new beginning (not!)

It’s been 5 to 6 years since that date with Zack and the interruption of his girlfriend Penny kissing him right in front of me, but I don’t care because I’ve moved on. I went to college for 6 years and graduated with my master’s degree. I graduated with my degree in fashion design, wedding planning as a minor, and a pastry baker as a major. I own my own bakery in Columbus, Ohio where I live for the past 23 years. My bakery’s name is M’s Bakery. I have two part time jobs which is fashion designing at this center near town and a wedding planner place near my house. It’s been a good day so far; I have a group of kids coming in to learn how to make cookies. Meanwhile on Zack’s side he’s at his friend Tony’s house chilling.

“Man I can’t believe we’re men now with no more school or tests,” “we’re free!” Tony told Zack while drinking his beer.

“Yeah, I know,” “I guess being single is the best thing that ever happened to me,” Zack said while laughing.

“I feel bad for you though,” Tony said with a smirk on his face.

“What do you mean you feel bad for me?” Zack asked while looking at his best friend.

“You know that Penny broke up with you ever since you didn’t tell her about your date with that girl,” Tony said

 “For your information I broke up with her because she was getting on my nerves and she was a pain in my ass,” Zack said.

“Well I bet you can’t turn an ugly girl into a hot & sexy girl, and make her fall in love with you within 4 weeks,” Tony said in a teasing way.

“Nah man I just want to be single without girl trouble,” Zack said shaking his head.

“What are you a chicken?” Tony teased.

“No!” “It’s just that I don’t want to handle all the drama of a girl,” Zack said.

“Well then I think you can’t do it,” Tony said.

“Fine I’ll do it,” Zack said while sipping his beer.

“Okay then let’s make this interesting,” “If you win you will get $50,000, but if I win when the time is up you will lose $50, 000,” Tony said while smiling.

“Okay, but prepare to lose,” Zack said while smiling too.

“There’s a catch though, I get to pick the girl,” Tony said.

“Hold up that’s not fair,” Zack told his friend.

“Fine then back out,” Tony said.

“Never” Zack said angrily.

Tony pulled out the old high school yearbook and looked for a victim for Zack. He passed many girl names, but they weren’t the right girls until he found my name and picture.

“Her,” Tony said while showing Zack the picture.

“Her!” “No, no, and no!” “Not her,” Zack said while pacing around on his friends’ floor.

“Why not?” Tony asked. “She’s perfect!” Tony said with sarcasm.

“Do you know who that is?” Zack asked his friend.

“No not really,” Tony shook his head.

“That my friend is Makaylah Johnson; she’s the girl who left me in the restaurant that night because she saw Penny!” Zack told his friend.

“Ohh so that’s the girl then she perfect and you now have 4 weeks to complete your task,” Tony said with a smile.

Zack left and went to go find me who was hard because he doesn’t know where to begin. He searched high and low, street after street and finally found M’s Bakery that I own and I’m the head pastry chef. He waited for a while before going in, first he saw a bunch of children go into the bakery and then he saw me greet them. He was amazed at how I grew even more beautiful since high school. He finally walked in and waited to meet me who I never knew that he was there until I saw him, but that doesn’t happen yet.

“Hello and welcome to M’s Bakery how may I help you?” the cashier asked Zack.

“Hi I’m looking for someone with the name Makaylah Johnson is she here?” Zack asked even though he knows I’m there.

“Yes she is here so wait just a minute and I’ll go get her for you,” the cashier said with a smile.

“Makaylah there’s a gentleman out here that wants to speak with you,” the cashier told me in the back room.

“Okay and can you help out with the children for me Tina?” I asked.

“Yeah sure no problem,” Tina said with a smile.

“Kate I want you to take over the cash register for Tina can you do that?” I asked Kate.

“Yes I can,” Kate nodded and went to her new post.

Once I came from the back room and saw Zack standing there I blinked in amazement, but I was still angry with him.

I walked over to him and said “What do you want Zack?” with no enthusiasm.

“I just came to see how everything was in your life,” Zack said. “So how is everything?”

“What did you really come here for?” I asked him.

He took me outside to tell me why he was really here because he didn’t want people to know his business.

“Well I sort of made a bet with my friend Tony and I have to turn a girl of his choice into the girl of my dreams, and then I have to make her fall in love with me within 4 weeks,” Zack told me.

“Okay that’s nice and all, but why are you telling me this for?” I asked him curiously.

“Well because you are the girl that is for the bet,” he said.

“Well sorry but you picked the wrong girl because I have work to do,” I told him.

“Look if you don’t do this I will lose $ 50,000 and do you know how much money that is?” Zack asked me.

“Yeah I know how much money that is but you can’t make me do this bet,” I said while walking away.

I went back to work leaving Zack where he was staring in disbelief. Zack kicked a rock around and then picked it up and threw at the glass of a store next to my shop. Not knowing there was an alarm system, he stood there for a second until he heard the system go off then he got into his car and drove off. There were people standing around the store and they saw everything. One person called the police to tell them what happened and then told them the license plate numbers and the type of car. Everyone in my shop heard the alarm and panicked a little until I told them that it was the system next door. I went to the shop next door and thought of the first person that would do this (Zack). I went back into my shop and told Kate she’s in charge, and left to find Zack. I called my friends and told them what was going on and then told them to meet me on the highway. The police chased Zack on the highway and blocked him on both sides. Once I got there they were pointing their guns at Zack and telling him to put his hands up in the air. I yelled don’t shoot! At the police and ran to talk to Zack.

“What the hell are you doing?” I asked very scared.

“I’m not giving up until you do your part,” he said angrily.

“Well I’m not doing your stupid bet!” I yelled at him.

He pulled out his gun, grabbed me and pointed it at my head.

“Nobody shoot or else she’s gone!” Zack yelled furiously at the police. “Also if I see anyone following me you will find her dead on the street,” he yelled as he put me in the car and drove off.
