Kira took a step closer to the school doors with Lucy tugging her. She wasn't ready for this. It would be the same as always, but Lucy tried to convince her otherwise. Kira finally stepped through the doorway, feeling the rush of air as other kids hurried to their class, the loud voices overwhelming her, just the same as any time before. Why would this be any better? Lucy found her way through the crowd, keeping Kira close to her at all times. They had all but two periods together, which was good, since Kira didn't know anyone.
As they walked into their first period, Kira realized that this school was different than her previous schools. Her other schools had kids running around, tossing paper airplanes, and gum underneath the desks. The school she was in now, had kids sitting on the desks, talking to each other loudly. Lucy laughed at Kira's expression.
"See, I told you there was nothing to worry about," Lucy stated as a girl walked up beside her. Lucy turned around, her face lighting up as she saw who it was.
"Cassidy! Long time no see!" Lucy gave her a hug and introduced her to Kira.
"Kira, this is Cassidy. Cassidy, meet Kira," Kira shyly smiled at her, and Cassidy smiled back.
"See you around, Lucy!" Cassidy said as she walked to her other friends. Kira let out a breath she didn't know she was holding, which Lucy noticed.
"Your fine, Kira, calm down," She giggled. The teacher came in, looking bored. All of Kira's previous teachers were strict, paying attention to every move. Kira could tell that this man was the kind of teacher that didn't care what happened.
"Alright, class," He announced with a far away look in his eyes, "My name is Mr. Holden. I will give you the first twenty minutes of class to get to know each other. Then for the rest of class, we will discuss how your summer break was. Get to work,"
Kira didn't leave Lucy's side, hoping she would be her voice. They went around the room, Lucy explaining who was who. Kira was only partially listening, trying her best not to freak out. Once they were done, Mr. Holden called out, "Sit anywhere you like, and talk to your neighbors about what you did this summer. Then when the bell rings, you can leave," Kira sat next to Lucy, somewhere in the middle of a row. Lucy was talking to Cassidy, who was sitting beside her, so Kira tried to talk to the guy next to her who had amazingly dark hair.
"Hi, I'm, uh, Kira," Lucy told her who he was earlier, but she couldn't remember. He nodded to her, looking at her intensely. "Mike," he said, and continued to look at her. Kira was becoming uneasy, so she turned to Lucy. She was done talking to Cassidy and was now reading her book. Kira pulled out her new book as well, opening it up, when the bell rang. Kira sighed, closing her book, when Mike called out to her, "See you later, Kira." He then walked out the door, leaving Kira thinking about it. Lucy pulled her out of the class and to their lockers, which were surprisingly close to each other.
"Okay, Kira, I'll see you at lunch, so please don't freak out! Then we have all classes together after lunch," Lucy walked off, waving back to Kira. Kira left for the rest of her classes, hoping it would go smoothly.
She walked into history class and sat down near the window. She pulled out her book, waiting for the bell to ring, when someone pulled up a chair beside her.
"Why are you reading? Wouldn't you rather be talking?" It was Mike again. Kira quickly explained, "I don't like interacting with others," She continued reading but Mike kept pestering her.
"Why don't you?"
Kira was getting irritated. "I don't know, it's just who I am. Maybe it's because I move a lot and I don't get to have long lasting friends."
"You move a lot?"
Kira sighed, knowing it was pointless to read anymore. "Yes. The longest time I've spent in one place was eight months."
Mike let out a low, long whistle. "Wow, it must become exhausting after a while. I have never moved before, neither has my mom, but sometimes it feels like I'm somewhere else, but still being here, you know what I mean?"
Kira shook her head, not understanding what he was saying. "No, I don't,"
It was then when the bell decided to save her. Mike stopped talking to her, but didn't move. The class started, and Kira tried to pay attention, but with Mike glancing her way every minute, it was hard to do. She tried to tune into the teacher.
"This semester we will be doing a project called Back in Time. You will be with a partner, and the task is to pick an event in the past that has been a big impact on our country. You are your partner are required to make a timeline about it, write a two page essay about it and how it has changed our country, and make a movie of you and your partners acting out what happened. It's not as difficult as it seems, and you and your partner do not have to work together outside of school, unless you are falling behind or you wish to do so. I will assign partners today, and you can have the rest of class to talk with your partner and get to know them. You will be with this partner all semester, unless I switch you, so I hope you get to know your partners well."
Kira didn't like the sound of this. She would have to talk to others a lot. She sighed, knowing she could do nothing. The teacher started listing off names.
"Kelly and Courtney, Blake and Susanne, Amber and Darren, Jacob and Trent, Kira and Mike..." At that point Kira tuned out. At least she was partners with someone she kind of knew, but he talked a lot in the couple minutes Kira had known him, which she didn't like. To prover her point, Mike started nudging her in the shoulder.
"Hey, this is cool, we're partners! History isn't my best subject, but maybe this could help. Aren't we supposed to be talking now?" Mike asked as Kira pulled out her book. She inwardly groaned, and put the book back. "Yes, yes we are," Kira muttered. They talked for the rest of the period, more like Mike talking and Kira trying her best not to explode. Finally, but not soon enough, the bell rang. Kira shot up and gathered up her stuff. Right before she bolted for the door , Mike called out, "See you at lunch!"
Kira nodded, not responding, and ran out the door to her locker. She opened it up, but realized as she did that she never told Mike what period she had for lunch. Shrugging it off, she thought it was just an assumption, and will find out at lunch.
A couple periods later, lunch rolled up, and Kira walked into the lunch room, trying to find the perfect spot to sit. She found the perfect spot in the back, where it was private and no one sat. Kira sat down, right before Lucy bounced over and sat next to her.
"Hey, it's alright for Cassidy to sit here as well, right?" Kira nodded, just starting to eat when another tray plopped down beside her. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw dark hair darker than anyone she knew, and rolled her eyes. "Mike," Kira said, as he nodded back. She introduced him to Lucy, who was glad to see Kira making another friend. He then continued talking where he had left off in history. It was a lot of talking, but Kira found herself enjoying it. It was strange, Kira was completely changing. Usually she would be completely freaked out if someone was talking to her that long, but she was laughing along to the stupid jokes he was telling. She even told a few herself that she remembered from her childhood. How was it possible that Kira made two friends here and had never had one anywhere else?
