Kira's POV
Why was Mike acting so strange? I just took him to the clearing. Was there something there that he didn't like? I couldn't think about that now, as we were pulling into his driveway. I followed him out out of the car, wanting to make sure he got home okay. He snapped out of it, about to protest, but I didn't want to hear it. Mom hopped out of the car as well, already at the door, ringing the door bell. Mike stood there, looking very nervous.
I stood behind mom as the door opened. Behind it was a older lady who still showed beauty. She had long, dark hair and bright blue eyes, and she had a big smile on her face, until she looked up. Her face immediately drained all color from it, and her perfect smile dropped. I stood confused, and turned to my mom. Her mouth was hanging completely open, and I barely heard my mom whisper, "Kathryn?" Okay, this could not get any weirder. I looked over at Mike, who also looked confused. He didn't know either.
"Thank you for bringing home Mike. It means a lot to us," Mike's mom said, breaking the silence, but it wasn't a nice, heart-warming thank you. It was a cold, sarcastic thank you. What was that for? I looked back at my mom, who looked like she could attack someone. Why were they acting like this?
When I turned my head around once more, and noticed Mike's mom staring at me with so much hatred that if looks could kill, I would be instantly dead. I looked back at her, very confused and scared. I didn't know her, so how could she hate me?
Then, very quickly that I barely had time to call out bye, she pulled Mike inside and slammed the door in our faces. I was about to ask mom what that was about, but she grabbed my arm and yanked me back to the car. She opened the door for me and walked to her side. I got in, not sure what to say, as my mom started to pull out. I finally decided on saying, "So, you and Mike's mom know each other?" Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say, because if it was possible, mom held on even tighter to the steering wheel. Her knuckles were almost completely white now.
"Yeah," my mom answered quietly, "When I lived back in Pennsylvania before you were born we were, uh, good friends," I nodded, even though I knew she wasn't telling me the truth. Mike told me he lived in Tennessee all his life with his mom, and that his mom has never moved as well, but I didn't push her. She seemed angry enough.
"Why does she seem to hate us? I never met her," My mom didn't even glance in my direction.
"We had an, argument, and she never liked me or any of my relatives ever since," mom spoke through clenched teeth. She was a horrible liar. I wanted to know the truth, but her face told me not to ask. When we finally reached home, she turned off the car and marched inside quickly before I could even get out. I walked inside, and found my parents whispering urgently.
I called out to them, confused by their behavior, "Hey, can Lucy sleep over tomorrow? Tomorrow is Friday," My mom looked at me worriedly, before quickly turning back to dad and whispering a quick sentence. Dad nodded back, looking very stressed. Mom motioned me over and I sat down across from them. What is going on?
"Honey," my mom started, "You can't hang out with that boy, Mike, anymore. He's bad news," I stared at them like they were crazy.
"Bad news? He's the second friend I've made!" Sure, I might've said that he's really annoying before, but that doesn't mean he's not my friend.
"Kira, mom's right, you can't hang out with him anymore. His family-" I cut my dad off. How dare he accuse Mike of something his family did?
"Are you telling me I can't hang out with Mike because of something his family did? That doesn't seem right," I said angrily.
"Please Kira, just listen to us. His family isn't good,"
"That doesn't mean he is bad! This isn't fair!"
