The Center Stage

The dawn breaks the sky
I put on a smile.
It will stay there all day.
It will be there awhile.

Then they'll call my name—
time to pay my wage.
And I'll perform all day:
welcome to the center stage.

And I'll throw out my rehearsed lines,
like how I don't love him anymore.
Just be careful not to have too much wine...
don't let them see the open doors.

And I'll dance like a happy butterfly,
and I'll sing like a nightingale,
and I'll speak like a wise rabbi
with a lot of telling tales.

But the center stage
is not a life that's mine to live.
The spotlight dies, the curtains fall...
and then I'd have to leave.
