《Chapter 1》
《Chunany's pov》
It was very windy today, my siblings took two large dishes that we used in the kitchen, I took my crossbow with a satchel of arrows, while my mother carried a picking stick and strapped a sharp knife to her waist. We locked our doors then walked to the back gate of the compound, we waved good morning to the guards stationed on the high fence that surrounds the compound we live in, it was an apartment complex in the woodland area of Denali, Alaska.
A lot of fruit trees were outside these walls that the owner had planted, for those who live at the apartments to benefit from. There were numerous orchards spanning over six acres of land along this uneven terrain. We, like most people who now called this place our home, forage out here from time to time. Any fruits or animals we caught that was edible, we took back with us. Some residents were better off than some, but we all share the pain of loss.
The northern regions were cold, wet and sometimes it was foggy for days. The landscapes beauty was disrupted by old buildings, discarded vehicles and unkept roadways. The old water pipe mains still brought water but we didn't drink it, we only used it to bathe, wash our clothes and so fourth because there were rust in the water from the pipes. We have a few water containers that we took to the river every week to refill, we have to go early in the mornings because they were always a lot of other people wanting to fill up water too and they dirty the water by stirring it up too much.
My mother had found a clean plastic drum on one of our foraging trips and we brought it back in the van, washed it out properly and use it to store clean drinking water. All our basins, buckets and other water containers were kept filled up with water for those days, when the pipes run dry because the pipe mains were turned off. Water was in abundance, but Rafique chose to be spiteful when he didn't get his own way, or when he claimed someone owes him.
We steered clear of him and his men as much as possible, no one wants to be on his bad list.A small grunt caught my attention as we picked a few apples and pears found on the trees, we always tried to be early before the others or we wouldn't get anything from the trees out here. The guards sometimes didn't allow anyone out, so the trees could replenish and they also monitored who went out each day. Sometimes we had to give away some of what we got and we couldn't afford to give away anything. We have to save as much for the days that we found nothing.
I saw a wild pig digging for roots a few feets away, I put my finger on my lips for them to be quiet and crept as close as I can. I aimed and shoot two arrows dropping the fat pig on the spot, we hardly found animals out here these days, he must have escaped from a pen.
"We will have to be quick," my mother whispered coming to stand behind me.
I nodded and retrieved my arrows wiping them off, she unsheath her sharp knife and I put all the fruits in one dish so we could use the other one to put the butchered meat in. It was a big fat pig and could feed us for days. My twelve year old brother Quasi got some tree leaves to help put the meat on, they were familiar in what we need to do to survive.
A thought struck me that we only had two dishes. "Mommy this will be a lot of meat to pass the guards," I said to my mother.
"Yes, how will we take it all in?" She aske in a concerned voice.
"The greedy brutes sometimes wanted more than half," She remarked her face merging into misery.
