《Chapter 4》
《Chunany's pov》
It was almost two in the afternoon now and my stomach grumbled, I hope Ms. Blair cooked before I reach home, sometimes she didn't start when I return back after five. I couldn't complain, sometimes I would have to prepare something to eat if she had ate at one of her friends or over by the main house.
The rain started to drizzle, I got up and headed back to the farms, nearly walking straight into Rafique. I was very surprised to see him, after offering my apologies I hurriedly went on my way back to the farms. Later that night I wondered what he was doing in the trees and decided to walk the other way from the next day onwards.
My monthly issue came the fourth week of me being here, the cramps were unbearable as I carried the woods and the water. When I finished feeding the animals I sat near the farms, we would not be working today. The night before when I told Ms Blair, she said that I should find something else to do. She didn't cook and her tone of voice kept me from asking for anything, so I just took my tea alone this morning.
It was very cold and my worn out jacket only offered little warmth, I got up and went to where we usually picked berries as my stomach continuously rumbled. There wasn't any on the trees as they were going out of season, so I walked to the woodshed that held the chopped woods I distributed in the mornings, taking a sturdy block of wood and placing it near the door I sat down. I did not want to go home for her to find something for me to do, my belly was really hurting topped with the hunger pangs.
I hugged myself closing my eyes and started counted to one hundred in my head. "Have you finished all your duties?" My eyes flew open and I shot up at Rafique's voice.
"Uhnm, yes, I mean no sir," I said standing up straight.
He placed both his hands on his sides, as I digged my brain for an excuse. "I will go and finish them now sir, I just stopped to drink some tea." I said taking up my bag carefully with the thermos.
"What do you have left to do?" He asked and I looked on the ground feeling depressed.
"Walk with me," he said or more like ordered then took up a bucket and marched off.
I followed him trying to keep up and we arrived at the spring then walked to an area with densely growing trees. Surprisingly we came to a little hut, he unlocked the door and took out two fishing rods. It was a very small hut, I watched him fixed the rods, then he took out a smaller bucket and two dishes out of the big bucket he had carried. He was a really big man, I thought as I sneaked a look at him, it was rumoured that he had a lot of girlfriends. He wasn't too bad looking and he was muscular.
He opened one of the dish and offered me some of his peeled fruits of pineapple, cantaloupe, apple, blueberries and plums. I place a few on one of the dish covers and ate.
"I have to eat before I fish, or else I'll think it is hunger that kept the fishes away." He said opening the other dish. h
He placed some of his bread, eggs and ham on the dish cover for me, I ate everything too hungry to play with the food and then he taught me how to hook on the bait and how to throw the line. I could not believe I caught three fishes and he only caught two, complaining that he may have taught me too well. We scaled and gutted the fishes, it was getting dark by the time we head back and I thought how it hadn't been so scary fishing and talking with him. Although he mainly asked questions about my family and how we came to live here, he asked if I missed my boyfriend and I told him that I didn't have one, he had laughed disbelievingly.
