I end up spending the next few days at my grandparent's house.
In between going to work, going grocery shopping, playing too much scrabble, and learning new recipes, it's basically bliss. Nonna and papa are amazing, I really lucked out in the grandparent region because they're genuinely fun to be around. I also realize how much I really crave people. I like having someone ask how I'm doing. I like having a person to be beside me constantly. I like the fact nonna always kisses me on the cheek and says I love you before we go to sleep.
I like being taken care of. And, I feel like that totally goes against the modern feminist agenda of being independent and empowerment but . . . sometimes I don't want to be any of that. I like relying on people, I like the idea of people looking out for you, I like the idea of always having someone with you through both the good or bad.
That's probably just my privileged opinion though.
It's the second Friday of the month, which means it's our monthly family dinner. So everybody manages to take some time off and just dedicate it to coming over to the house. That means every person in on our too-big family is here. Uncle Oliver and aunt Meg always come with Vonnie and Jimmy. Aunt Emma and uncle Reid (Hugh's away, so they just come as a couple). My dad, alone. Then there's Grandma Rachel, who's not really my grandma but I just call her that, and she always brings her husband Grandpa Benny too. But the only person that really doesn't fit into the family thing is uncle Amir.
He's giving me a hug and I admire his new loose tropical button-up, it's what he basically lives and they show off his, surprisingly, toned arms. Isla once told me he's a total silver fox, she puts him up on the god tier alongside Patrick Dempsey and Hank from Ant-Man. Sometimes she goes too far with it and I have to remind her that he's technically still an uncle.
"You never drink," he says to me, eyeing up my glass of wine. Uncle Amir actually bought my an expensive bottle of firewhiskey for my eighteenth birthday, and it's still sitting in a cupboard at home untouched. "Oh, Bhagwan, what happened to you kid? It was the Potter, right? I told your grandma that all they've ever brought to girls named Angelina is heartbreak."
I'm beyond confused, but Grandma Rachel and nonna are beside us right away.
"Amir, you need to write to me more," Grandma Rachel says.
Nonna nods. "We get so worried for you, you're over there all alone most of the time. Even Raj agrees."
"Didi," he groans at nonna when she's trying to fix his hair. "You two need to remember I'm not that much younger than you anymore. Being five years older at this age is much different than we were teenagers."
When I grow older, I wonder who'll my friends be. My nonna has about five friends she's had for her entire life and they're this tight-knit group that have always been there for each other. Sometimes I'll look through old pictures of them and it's almost a little sad because you notice this one blonde girl who passed away when they were very young, and sometimes you also see this tall and lanky boy with scars on his face that also passed away.
When they were growing up, they constantly had to worry about wars and death eaters. I can't even begin to realise how lucky I am.
