"Sorry Hanami, but I can't give you the lead role," Mrs Fujikawa declared.
"Bu-But why?" I managed to say, a lump forming in my throat as my eyes began to itch.
"I believe Fuyuko is a better fit for this role," she explained, her eyes full of pity.
"But I don't understand," my eyebrows knitted together in confusion.
"I'm sorry Hanami," she repeated once again.
"But I-" I gulped and blinked away the tears.
"There will always be other roles."
"No," I shook my head, my shock and sadness morphing into outrage as I refused to believe this. "I did everything you told me. I practised every day just to get it right! I worked very hard for this and you're just giving it to Fuyuko?!"
"Hanami, this isn't negotiable," she frowned.
"Just why don't you give me a chance?!" I began shouting, my yells attracting the attention of the other members.
"Hanami, stop being so stubborn," she warned, but I just ignored her.
"Fuyuko has had her chance to shine multiple times! I only ask for one single role! Is that too much to ask for?!"
"Fine, if you're so adamant, and you want to shine so desperately, you can be the shooting star."
"That is a prop!" I screamed and soon enough, I heard the other members giggling and laughing at my expense.
"Wasn't this what you wanted, Hanami?" She said dryly, not at all fazed by my indignation.
"I can't believe this!" I continued yelling.
"That's no way to speak to a teacher," she frowned. "If you're going to have that attitude then it's best if you leave. You can come back once you've calmed down."
I scoffed. She ridiculed me in front of everyone and now she was kicking me out?! This wasn't fair!
My brow furrowed and without saying another word, I grabbed my bag and stormed off.
"Not so cocky now, huh?" I heard Fuyuko smirk as I walked by.
I burst the doors open and left the room. I stomped through the hallways but my anger soon died down. Instead, it was replaced by that overwhelming grief that had consumed me when I first heard the news.
I knew Fuyuko had always been Mrs Fujikawa's favourite but... Wasn't a teacher's job giving everyone a chance? Wasn't a teacher's job to treat everyone equally? So then, why was Fuyuko always the star?
I had been so caught up in my thoughts, that I forgot to take my surroundings into account and I ended up bumping into someone.
"Watch where you're going," was the first thing they said.
As soon as I recognized that voice, my face was quick to turn sour. Great. The last thing I needed today. The student council reprimanding me.
"You should watch who you're talking to," I spat out without thinking.
Wait. Oh no. Why did I just say that?! Why was I antagonizing him?! Was I crazy?!
"And who are you exactly?" He looked down at me.
Oh well. There was nothing to lose now.
"You think you're that great to not remember your classmates' names?" I scoffed, though my voice came out much less commanding and deprecating than it sounded in my head.
