Nine

I came late last night I was with Derek. I really wish I could've brought him home with me but he's in a better place now.

I called Richard and told him what happened he was devastated. I'm on my way to his house to tell the kids. I can't imagine how they will react. They were a wreck when mom died.

Derek has been with them all their life. Once I got to Richard's house I knocked on the door and told the kids to come sit outside with me.

"We need to talk sit down" I said and we all sat down on the steps.

"So you know how Derek said he was in New York?"

"Yea is he still there?" Said Alex

"When is he coming back?" Said Izzie

"No he won't come back... guys he lied about being in New York."

"So where is he"

"He was in a hospital" I said

"Wait... you said was. Is he...." Cristina said sadly

"Dead?" Alex said softly

"He is I'm sorry he died last night that's why I was gone. He had till Tuesday but he couldn't hold on much longer." Every started crying tear threatened to leave my eyes but I didn't allow them to.

"Mer... are you.... Okay" George said in between sobs.

"..No"

"I'm sorry, he was your best friend you should be sad too" Alex said

"Not right now. Right now I'm focused on you guys" I gave them a sad smile.

Once everyone called down I told them the funeral was in a few days.

Monday

I gave the kids a decision today either they can stay home and I'll call the neighbors to watch them or they can go to school. They all decided to stay home.

I called the neighbor and they said they will get their daughter who was about 19 to come take care of the kids.

"Hey thank you I'll pay you when I get home from school"

"Don't worry I heard what happened I'm sorry"

"Thank you, kids please behave"

I grabbed my bag and keys and headed to school.

"Meredith why are you here?" Richard asked when I entered the front doors.

"I couldn't stay home everyone is grieving but I couldn't not in-front of them"

"I understand okay go to class then"

During my 3rd period class I got a phone call and this teacher hates when people's phone ring so he makes everyone answer their phone calls on speaker and in-front of everyone.

"Grey you know the drill stand up here" I rolled my eyes and walked to the podium. I answered the phone call and placed it on speaker.

"Hello this is Meredith grey who am I speaking to"

"Hello Miss. Grey it's Jen from Child Services I was calling to let you know, you are now the legal guardian of all four of your siblings"

"Oh my gosh thank you!"

"Congratulations have a good day"

"You too"

I hanged up the call and everyone was in shock. No one knew I was getting custody of my sibling. The only person the knew was Derek and now he isn't here for me to tell him the good news.

"Congratulations Grey" my teacher said

"Thank you" I said and went back to my seat.

As soon as I sat down I heard the Intercom ding which meant the principal had something to say.

"Good afternoon students. I want everyone to take a moment of silence for the loss of an incredible, smart, and loving senior classmate, Derek Shepherd." when Webber said his name everyone gasped.

People were crying and some were shocked. Yes they lost a classmate but he was treated like shit by all of them so for them to be crying is bullsh-

"It's horrible news but it's even horrible for his best friend, Meredith Grey. Both Shepherd and Grey have had each others back since Grey moved to Seattle in the 1st grade. Derek Shepherd passed away just last Saturday in Meredith's arms and for her to be here today shows how much of a strong person she is." As he was talking I had my eyes closed tears constantly falling down to my cheeks.

"Meredith is the closest thing I have to a daughter I've known her for a long time because Of her mother. May she rest in peace. Here at school Meredith only had Derek. He was her rock. He was always there for her and so was she. So please treat Meredith nicely thank you have a good day"

"Rest in peace Derek Shepherd" he said before the intercom dinged again indicating he was done talking.

I hated that Webber spoke about me because now everywhere I went all eyes were on me. During lunch Jackson sat next to me again.

"Hey Meredith"

"Hi" i said keeping my head down

"I'm sorry for your loss"

"Thank you"

Jackson kept on talking about his life and I just kept giving him simple short answers.

It was now the end of the day. I need to go to the kids school to change their emergency forms.

Day of Derek's funeral

Today, today is the day. Today everyone was dressed in black. I drove with the kids to the Cemetery. We got out of the car and sat in the chairs in-front of the casket.

The funeral was small manly consisting of my family, Webber and his wife, Jackson who begged to come, and a few other kids from school.

We all placed white flowers on top of Derek's casket as they were about to lower it down.

"Bye Derek I'll miss you" George said tearing up.

"I should've called you uncle Derek" Alex said 

"You were great person Derek" Iz said

"Meredith here is being strong for us Derek. She hasn't cried well not that I know of. Anyways bye Derek I'll see you some day" Cristina said

"Derek I'm hurting I need one of your hugs. I miss you so much. I promise to visit often. I love you too" I said tearing up and placing a kiss on the casket.

As they were lowering the casket I heard sobbing everywhere. Everywhere but not from me.

And like that he was gone again.
