!Trigger Warning!
Dick couldn't hold in his grin. Slade was internally laughing at the boy. With the boy being ten now and having ADHD, Tompkins confirming his suspicion. He'd told her not to put him on pills. He'd heard and saw what the pills did to kids. It made them a shell of their former self. Sure it might take Dick a little longer to learn something. Slade would just have to teach the boy something a few more times. But he might never get the boy to sit still for more than a minute.
"Dick, sit down for a second or bounce around where someone can't spot you." Slade called softly.
Dick stopped his bouncing around with a dramatic sigh, "When are we going in?"
"Once the caretaker comes out."
Dick hummed, "Could that be him?" Dick pointed to the guy locked up the last side door.
"Yes that's him." Slade watched the man get into his car and drive away, "Let's go."
Dick jumped after Slade trying to keep in the shout of joy. They landed in the alley below. Slade pulled aside the sower lid and jumped down. Dick followed without question, replcing the cover over head.
"I reeks down here." Dick groaned.
Slade snorted without thinking and regretted it, "I can't disagree with you there kiddo. Let's get moving."
Slade led Dick down the walk way all the way under the museum, "Can you tell me what's going to happen now Dick?"
Dick put on a face that said, 'thinking', before saying, "Lazer through the floor? That's what you said back at the haunt. I still don't under stand how that is done."
"Look in the third pocket on your right. It will be a small cylindrical object."
Dick pulled it out, "It looks like something you'd use to play with a cat."
Slade chuckled, "It kind of is. Now aim it at the ceiling above us. Yup just like that. Now press the button." Dick jumped a little when a red beam came from the object and hit the ceiling. Slade steadied the boy's hand with his own, "Slowly. Good." When the circle in the stone was done it fell into the water below, "See. That was good."
Slade reached down and picked up his son and lifted him to the hole. He followed after. Dick was already peeking around but had the good sense not to touch anything. When the boy saw Slade he started leading the way to the object of their desire. But as Slade predicted, the object was gone.
"You remember were that secret room was Dick?"
Dick nodded, "Yup." He trotted his way back through the halls to the painting hall. Dick stopped in front of a replica painting of the Starie Night. Slade hummed, looking around the painting. There was not gap between the painting and the wall, "Can I touch it?"
Slade blinked, before giving another snort, "Not yet. I don't know what kind of security it has." A turning in Slade's gut told him to just get out of there. It was amplified by worry for Dick being there, "D-" he caught himself before saying the boy's name. He felt watched. Thinking fast Slade thought through names that were similar to Dick's name, "Renegade." Dick looked up at him in confusion before turning to worry as the boy saw the hard look Slade was sporting, "We're leaving."
"But-" Dick suddenly shut his mouth as he felt something pricle at his sense too, "Someone's here." He whispered.
Slade nodded, "Let's go. I don't like this."
"Yes sir."
They didn't get far before a shadow dropped to the floor. Slade reacted on instinct garbbing Dick and shoving the boy behind him. The shadow in front of them had not markings. No color. Just pure black cloths that looked no different than any other assassin.
