They sit together for a while, Reese contemplating why a joke had made either of them so concerned, then Amie speaks again and answers his unspoken query. "Thanks. I mean, it's not just the badboyhalo joke, really. I don't know what kind of drama this all will bring, what with my crazy-protective parents and your crazy-in-general fans and school."
I mean, crazy fans is right... he thinks. Reese looks her dead-on in the eyes and smiles ruefully. "Hey, it's going to be fine. From what I know about your mom, she's not very present. Correct me if I'm wrong, but she won't notice much." He glances away for a minute and peeks through the window to the front yard. "I think the pizza's here."
"You're right about my mom. And as for the pizza I'll run and get it, you can open minecraft if you want. Be right back." Amie jogs down the carpeted stairs out of Reese's sight.
He barrels down the stairs and hall when she comes back inside, sliding on his socks into the kitchen. "Oooh, what did you get on the pizza?" He says, excited to eat. "Wait, there are no mushrooms, right? I hate mushrooms." Reese lifts the lid, wafting the steam from the still-hot pizza toward his nose.
"No mushrooms." Amie grabs a pair of napkins from the drawer on the wall of the counter-bar, balancing two white ceramic plates in a hand. She sets everything down and goes to get water glasses from the cabinet.
Amie starts to pick up one cup from the shelf, but it suddenly slips through her fingers and shatters on the floor, the shards tinkling to a stop on the tile floor. She freezes up with a surprised look on her face, and glances toward Reese. "Uh, no pizza yet," she laughs, and cranes her neck looking around herself to see how to get out.
Reese stands and tiptoes over to the other side of the bar, and grimaces. Oof. "Here, I can help." He offers her a hand and she takes it, jumping over the visible shards to him and bracing her other hand on the granite countertop.
They successfully make it out of the danger zone with minimal injuries, except that Reese stubs his toe on the wall when they're cleaning up the glass.
"You okay?" Amie asks as he winces and sucks in a breath, continuing to sweep up glass bits along the wall, but looking up toward him like she's worried. "Did you step on a piece?"
"No, I'm fine, I just hit my foot on the cabinet," he giggles, wiping up the last of the splinters and helping her up. "Hey, uh, where's the bathroom?"
She gestures down the hall toward the stairs. "You can use the upstairs bathroom, it's the door next to my room. I'll get the pizza stuff."
"Great," he smiles, following her instructions to the restroom and trotting up the stairs, adjusting his orange sweatshirt's strings. Amie turns away, getting a new glass cup from the cabinet.
Reese closes the door of the bathroom with a sigh of relief, clicking the lock on the doorknob shut securely. He extracts his phone from his sweatpants pocket and quickly opens his messages.
