37 || Amie

Amie is woken up from her sleep to an announcement at one point during the flight and tries to ignore it so she can fall back asleep; but her music freezes up for a moment and every time she starts to drift off, it hits a surprising note, someone on the flight talks loudly or an advert plays.

An hour or two passes before the plane's trajectory begins to shift, the building air pressure in her ears surprising Amie awake again. She looks at the sky and the tiny cities out the window as she drinks her almost stale-tasting bottled water, to get rid of the odd post-sleep flavor in her mouth, starting to chew a piece of mint gum.

She rubs her eyes and checks the time (which reads 02:03, already having changed as she had passed through each time barrier—another benefit of Apple devices), pausing her music as one of her less desired songs plays for probably the tenth time over the entire flight. Yet another robotic-sounding announcement comes on over the speakers, and its message sends a buzz of adrenaline through Amie's body.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your pilot speaking, the seatbelt light is about to come on as we begin to land in London Gatwick airport. Please enable airplane mode on your devices, raise the table for your seat and stay there, and we will land in about twenty minutes so we can begin to leave the plane."

The next fifteen minutes drag by, as Amie looks out the window to see lit-up witching-hour London growing closer and closer by the minute.

She imagines each car driving on the London freeways to be Reese and Toby on their way to pick her up from the airport, and before Amie knows it the plane's wheels touch the pavement of the landing strip.

The chatter on the plane grows louder and Amie rocks back and forth in her seat as she waits. Every single nerve in her body tingles and she fidgets with her hands as the first-class passengers are declared free to disembark, then the first rows of economy where she's seated alone. She grabs her carry-on with her phone, practically vibrating in excitement, and rushes down the steps off of the plane.

Once Amie is inside the airport, she locates the baggage claims for her flight, where passengers' luggage is going around a carousel/conveyor belt of sorts. The line of colorful suitcases and bags is almost mesmerizing to her tired eyes, and Amie finds herself staring for a couple of seconds before she engages in looking for her own luggage. As she scans for her two bags, her phone vibrates. It's Reese.

obscenely tall boy <3

where are u Amie we're almost at the airport

kinda around gate 17b I think

k cool we'll find it

see you soon!!!

:D

see you in a few mr boo :]

She finds herself grinning so much it practically hurts, and looks up in time to see her pair of bags come out of the conveyor belt chute next to each other. Amie hoists up a bag on each shoulder, and finds a corner in the little food court near a Starbucks outlet where she can hopefully buy a coffee and wait for Toby and Reese to show up.

Amie realizes she doesn't have British pounds and sighs as she resigns to wait without caffeine. She's already gotten rid of her gum, too, but she's out of it and can't even buy more. It's exasperating.

Amie taps her feet, cracks her knuckles one by one, wiggles her toes in her sneakers, but of course nothing makes the time pass faster. Everyone significantly taller than average height looks like Reese for a minute, every short-ish brunette like Toby. She has to resist the urge to call one of them to find where they are. Amie slides a ring on and off her middle finger, twisting it.

She's not a very patient person, and the fact that she can't buy the coffee that's right next to her isn't helping at all.

Another tall blonde passes, another two short brunettes . Not Reese, neither of them Toby. It's exhausting, being kept on edge like this. And even if she called for the pair out loud, the airport is so busy in these wee hours of the morning that she's barely audible over everyone else's voices.

Her phone buzzes again, this time a call from Toby. When Amie picks up, it's Reese on the line. "My phone died so I couldn't see the gate number. Where are you?"

"In the food court near gate 17, lamenting the fact that I don't have the right fuckin' currency to buy some caffeine." Amie chuckles, her stomach fluttering. He's so close.

Reese laughs, a sound that sends another smile across Amie's face. "We can just go to sleep when we get back to Toby's. I'm passing gate 12, by the way, we'll be here in a second." A couple of excruciatingly suspenseful minutes pass, as the two just sit on the call, waiting. "Oh, I'm almost there now."

"Is that you by the baggage?"

"No, not yet," he grins. "Let me give the phone back to Toby for a sec, I need to fix my coat."

"Okay, cool," Amie says to whichever one of them has the receiver in the moment that the phone is passed.

Toby's voice says the next bit, the sentence that makes her wiggle in excitement again. "So are you the one with the backpacks by the tiny Starbucks?"

Her heart beats faster and she looks around again. "Yeah! That's me!"

Finally, scanning the crowds, Amie glimpses a person who's clearly Toby, rounding a corner near the escalators and a Chili's Too outlet. She has to do a double take, before reality sets in. It's really them this time. Time slows as Reese follows in tow of his friend, face lighting up as their eyes meet.

She drops her bags on the bench where she'd been sitting, even her carry-on and her phone, and springs up from her seat, a noise of pure excitement slipping from her mouth.

The two run to each other from different sides of the room, Amie leaping into Reese's arms in the most adorably cliche way possible. Her arms around his neck lift her off the floor enough that she's on her tiptoes, a warm hug she's missed more than words can explain.

"I fucking missed you," she whispers, voice barely audible over the noise of every other person in the vicinity.

He grins into her shoulder. "I missed you too, honey."

After a long moment of simply coexisting, Reese pulls away a bit and her heart skips a beat as their eyes meet again, faces only inches apart. He breaks eye contact for a split second to look at her lips, asking a silent question and she gives just enough of a nod for both of them to agree.

Without a second more hesitation, this second in time is the moment their entire friendship has been leading up to. The incline of his jaw meets the curve of her cheek and each small spark is ignited. Her body is consumed with a fire unquenchable, not even by the gazes of the many people in the food court around them.

His lips press against hers, gently at first, but once Amie leans in again he becomes more confident. Reese's hand tangles into her uncombed hair and every touch feels like the first. Amie's fingers wrap around Reese's face, cupping his cheek gingerly in her hand and simultaneously bringing them even closer than she could have imagined.

She leans back with one hand still holding Reese's face. His face is flushed with red. Amie couldn't have wiped the smile away if she tried.

Reese's smile matches hers, but even more filled with awe. They just stand there in the same embrace, in the middle of the airport, staring in each other's eyes stupidly for what feels like forever in the best way possible.
