Ch. Three
Hana met Audrey and Maddie down the stairs, a few students ran past them to explore the corridor.
"Why do you keep asking us to go away?" Maddie inquired. Her glasses stooped dangerously low to the bridge of her nose.
" You just explained the reason." Hana twirled her locks. Audrey grimaced. It's not like it was her decision to enroll out here. There wasn't really any other option, or more like there were a few, but her dad didn't allow her choice.
" Okay, got that. But you're making it seem like Audrey is the only low ranked vampire in the-" Maddie stopped midair when she noticed Hana's eyebrow raise.
"Oh...she is"
"Oh ... I am"
The silence in the air was suffocative. Audrey did not know what she was supposed to think. Servants were easy preys, her smell would be noticeable. If she needed to survive, she must hide her smell, which meant she couldn't feed. Which meant she would starve and possibly die. Audrey McCain was doomed.
That night after she bid Maddie goodbye to her respective dorm, she noticed Maddie did not have any roommate. It was a privilege her father had provided for her. Maddie had firmly told him she would either be roomed with Audrey or have none at all. Maddie's room was a floor below hers.
Audrey walked back to her own room, the silence of the dorm corridor somehow seemed to comfort her in a strange manner. She took the elevator to her floor and as soon as she step foot, she noticed 4 or 5, girls stood around one of the doors. Room 113. It was apparently a room of one of the seniors. They squealed and fangirled, 2 of the girls hushed the others. They stood excited near the door as though expecting Shawn Mendes to magically come out of it.
The door opened, and a guy came out. A guy. In a girl's dorm. His hair was cut short from behind and his front hair was long. Not that long but still long. It was the guy she'd seen at the library today morning. He seemed way taller than the girls surrounding him, he politely moved them away from his personal space. A girl, older than him came out right after. Her hair was braided and she looked way too clean and refined than she should have been in her own damn room. She waved at those few girls around her door. It looked as though she was already used to the girls mobing her and stuff. But that still didn't explain what the guy was doing out here.
He noticed Audrey near the elevator, standing quiet. He smiled at her, entered the elevator and rode down. Not before casting a really quick wink.
The girls dramtically whined and tugged at each others arms. It was well understood that they were head over heels on whoever that was.
The older braided girl smiled and went inside her room, and locked the door.
Audrey thought nothing of it and walked past the girls to her own room.
" I finally got to see him!"
" he definitely winked, did you see his smile?"
" whose room did he visit though? She seemed sweet."
" She's his sister, you idiot."
They laughed and walked away, talking and fangirling all along.
Audrey lay down on her bed as soon as she reached the room. She was yet to process what Hana had told her this afternoon. Beside her, Hana was scrolling through her phone on the study desk. Audrey's study desk.
Audrey groaned. It was not even the first day of college and she already felt drained and frustrated.
Hana stopped scrolling, pulled a chair and sat in front of Audrey's bed.
" you know you should go back " Hana said.
" how many times are you gonna repeat that" Audrey chewed her fingernails. A nervous gesture.
" I don't mean hostility, I'm just trying to say you wouldn't like the treatment you'll receive once the other higher ranks get to know your rank. It's nothing nice. " Hana shoved Audrey's hands, and Audrey brought it right back and began biting her nails. A habit she had developed after her mother ran away.
" elaborate Ms. Whitlocks." Audrey said.
" well, Ms. McCain, the previous year we had 3 servants enrolling and the nobles and commons bullied them pretty bad. One of them even developed a mental disorder. You're lucky Madison is a noble and isn't mean to you. But there are others here, who don't share the same mentality. They wouldn't like low rankers among them. I, personally, have no problem sharing a room with you. But from what I have seen, you wouldn't last quite long here. There are humans out here, you could try pretending to be one of them but how long will that continue? It's advisable you go back. I mean it for the best" Hana said, her lips seemed chapped by the time she finished talking.
" Firstly, it's Maddie. And I can't go back even if I want to. By this time, my dad has probably already flew back to California. I can't afford another flight and I'm not sure he'd like me returning back without his consent." Audrey said.
" how are you gonna survive then? " Hana asked. She was on her phone again. Probably scrolling through expensive jewelleries and what not.
" I'll try my best. I'll be going back next year if i can afford any other college. Let me be this year, okay?" Audrey said, she lied down on her bed now, pulling the blankets over her head trying to escape this conversation. She was always doing that. Escaping.
" Also. Not to be nice or anything, but you can tell me if you face any problems out here. It's my second year here, I'm pretty familiar with everybody. I'll try to help as much as I can. " Hana said in an indecent manner but her tone conveyed genuine concern.
" Thanks. I appreciate it. Really." Audrey said, pulled the blanket down and smiled.
Hana got back to her own bed, a slightly spooky one with posters of goblins, elfs and skulls. Audrey wondered how anybody even liked those stuffs being near them while they slept.
She switched the lamp off and darkness enveloped the room. The window was still open, the night air felt cold and ruffled each of their hair.
" Don't forget we start the semester tomorrow. " Hana said, her tone sleepy.
" Kay. Night. And thanks again" Audrey said, half her sentence a yawn.
Hana nodded, not like that could be seen in the darkness.
It had been 15 minutes since Audrey tossed and turned in her bed, sleepy yet not being able to sleep. Hana seemed awake too, she jostled to her side to face Audrey and said,
" ah, another thing. We have a pure blood too, this year!" Hana said and then immediately snored, indicating she was "asleep" and wouldn't be talking further.
A pure blood. Okay. Audrey McCain was definitely doomed.
