"Pity. But you'll do."
Those words wouldn't stop echoing through my head. I heard them first when I had been walking through the hallway near Sairos's bedroom door late that fateful night. I heard them during every moment of the following days after finding his dead body. I heard them still a week later walking the castle grounds with Indigo. Now, as I sat in one of the chairs in Arlo's empty, unused bedroom, I heard them.
Arlo had been going to Sairos's bedroom to retrieve a book that would prove me wrong over an insignificant argument. I followed him moments after he left because I felt bad and didn't want to put him through the trouble.
If I had left with him, would I have died, too?
Would he still be alive?
I had turned the corner and could hear Arlo talking to someone in Sairos's room.
"...he's not here. I only came... to get a book... that he borrowed from me." I quickened my pace hearing his lack of breaths.
"Pity. But you'll do." The woman's voice had sounded indifferent, and perhaps that's why I now described the voice as cold. As I neared the door, I heard a small groan from Arlo. When I finally stood in the doorway, no one was there except for Arlo lying in a pool of blood on Sairos's floor.
"Your Highness," Knight Aylward spoke gently, bringing me out of the horrible memory. He moved from his spot in the doorway to stand behind me. "It's time for dinner. Your family will be waiting for you."
