King Alric sat on his throne with a mighty scowl on his face.

Queen Freyna looked out the windows, praying her son was okay.

Princess Lily sat off to the right, her back against the wall, hoping nothing terrible had happened to her brother. Princess Indigo and Princess Enida accompanied her with their own fears.

Heir Prince Sairos sat slumped in his own throne with a growing headache, while Princess Rhosyn of Liadan stood above his left shoulder, worried.

Two weeks ago, Prince Kano, Melai, and Evan had left for Uskyae, and still Alric had not heard from any of them.

"Lily, you swear you cannot reach Kano?" He asked, for what seemed to be the thousandth time.

And she shook her head no, for the thousandth time.

King Alric stood, and began to pace the floor. He decided it was no longer worth it to hide his worry from the rest of the family. Something must have gone wrong.

Lily dreaded the idea of their last conversation being the fight in the courtyard, and her heart ached from how they had spent the three days before he left again. She hated how they didn't dance together at the ball.

Please be okay, Kano, she thought, hoping he heard, but knowing he had not.

As if summoned by their thoughts, Depan frantically ran into the throne room with a piece of paper in his hands.

"Your Majesties," he said, out of breath, and bowed quickly before handing the paper over to King Alric.

"What is this?" Alric asked, reading it.

Freyna left the windows to peer over his shoulder.

Your Majesty,
The attempt on King Ronam's life was not a success. We were ambushed the moment we stepped foot onto shore. They knew we were coming, and they were ready for us. There was nothing we could do. We held our ground, but they came in droves and we knew that they would eventually tire us out. So we surrendered to escape death. Due to the attempted assassination, King Ronam has formally declared war against Broasau.
Our deepest apologies.
Signed, Prince Kano, and Melai and Evan Bray

"It arrived from Uskyae minutes ago, Your Majesties," Depan answered.

The king's jaw tensed, and the queen placed her hand over her heart.

"Father?" Sairos prompted.

King Alric threw the paper to the ground and marched off. "We are at war."
