As we walked back to the tavern, I stayed in the shadows, allowing them to envelope me in their soothing darkness. My muscles ached from the amount of shadows I had absorbed before entering the house, from the disappearing, and from the teleporting. Too much magic. My left shoulder pulsated; any time my arm moved, it throbbed.
When we reached the wall of the city, I didn't bother grabbing Kano's arm. I knew I was making Evan take multiple trips, but I didn't know if I could even teleport myself out. Besides, he deserved it for making me use so much magic; we easily could have gotten through the gates without using any.
I focused on my breathing as we walked away from the wall. I focused on my cold cheeks, on the way my ears started to throb from the cold, on the way my teeth kept wanting to clatter. Anything to take my attention away from my sore muscles. I just wanted to lie down and not move for a long time; but I kept pushing on, and used the time to soak up as much strength as I could from the healing shadows.
Let me walk you back, Melai, my phonx suggested.
No, Maura. I need to build up magical endurance. I did not use enough magic to resort to that. Besides... that is something Evan would do, and I am stronger than him.
