Chapter 18

"You know we're just going to Walmart, right?" Cocking an eye brow, Sam looks me up and down.

"Ya, I wasn't going in a tanktop, my hair was wet so I had to blow dry it, figured I'd try curling too." I explain, not thinking anything of my appearance.

"Okay, let's go." Sam turns to to tell everyone were going.

"Use your card, there no limit to it, get anything you need, you'll probably be buying all the groceries in DC." Nat tells me

"I don't have a credit card, never got one."

"Crap! That's right, my bad, I'll get it." She scorns herself then sprints upstairs, leaving us in an awkward moment. Moments later she returns, carrying something black.

"Here's your credit card, and SHIELD I'd, don't go whipping it around though, you're undercover, remember that." She warns and hands my the badge and a dark blue card.

"Of course." I nod and squat down to look at Baby.

"Baby, I'm just going to the store, I'll be back soon, if anything goes wrong, run, as fast as you can, I'll find you. Okay? Okay!" I rub her down her back and she gets excited.

"We're taking off, bye!" Sam calls from the door, I jog to him and we get in his Impala.

"What's in DC?" He asks.

"Nothing yet." I start debating telling him about the team.

"What will be there? If you can tell me." Digging further.

"A team, I'm leading a new team of, soldiers, pretty much. That's my mission here." I sigh, letting the cat out of the bag.

"What kind of team?" He pushes, pulling onto the road from the long drive.

"Kind of, Seal Team, Strike Team, Avengers Jr."

"Jr.?"

"Ya, kids, twelve to sixteen, I think." He's getting a little too nosy.

"Wow, and you're the leader?"

"Yup, so what all does Nat need?" I change the subject.

"Um, pretty mundane stuff, eggs, milk, so on." He takes the hint.

"Humorous." I mumble.

"Why so?"

"With all this crazy, demons, angels, hunting, superhero, secret spy crap. It's strange to be buying eggs, of all things, like normal people." I scoff.

"Well, were still human."

"But it's easy to forgot how strange it is. How normal and desensitized to all of it we are."

"And we look so normal to other people. Like who knows what people think, a brother and sister running errands?" He agrees.

"So oblivious to what hides in the dark. What really exists. Ignorance is bliss." I turn the radio on and he gives me a knowing smile.

We ride in comfortable silence mostly the rest of the ride; aside from song comments. We pull into the parking lot and I read the whole list: fruit, milk, eggs, snacks, bread, dish soap, chicken ect.

"Okay we'll get one cart, I'll get fruit, you take the basket and get bread milk a-" I start to plan.

"Keegan, calm down. Were grocery shopping not planning a rescue mission. We'll wing it." He stops me.

"Right, sorry." I take a deep breath, not knowing what got into me.

We walk in and it's slightly warmer in Walmart than it was outside, but still cold. I grab a cart and lean on it with my chest, walking lazily. We decide to get certain thing sand meet back here or there, one of us taking the cart. After the third round I go to get some milk and orange juice. The plastic seams on the jug handle uncomfortable press into my fingers, causing me to regret not taking the cart. I walk across the freezer isle, drink isle, bread, coffee, all the way to the baking isle before I'm confronted by a clearly disturbed Sam.
