Chapter 32
"So Christmas is rapidly approaching. What's on Captain Americas list?" I say over breakfast before we leave for the airport.
"I don't really do Christmas." He mumbles.
"Well, ba-hum-bug much?"
"After ninety years, it gets a little old."
"Okay- years spend in a less than conscious state don't count and you know that."
"I suppose, what do you want for Christmas?"
"Peace of mind." I joke.
"That's Bruce's area of expertise."
"I don't know what I want, I've never done much Christmas before. Something with meaning I suppose."
"I'll keep that in mind. The team usually goes to Tony's dinner a few days before then does our own thing."
"So you spend Christmas alone? That's a little depressing."
"You were alone on Christmas last year, not to mention every other holiday."
"But you're Captain America, it's just wrong."
He rebuttals that I don't have a point. We argue lightly on the way to the airport. Finally he tells me to simply surprise him with a gift.
From then I take a plane to a lab Banner has in North Dakota of all places. He had, of course, asked me to keep his whereabouts hidden from the others. I was flattered he trusted me with this information.
He begins to run test on me. Blood test, endurance tests, breathing test. He even test my freaking hair. He monitors my vitals while I perform various task, then while I execute my powers.
He takes pages and pages of notes I don't bother to try and read. After two days if this, he tries to explain it to me.
"So a lot of your power seems to be extra-terrestrial. Specifically when you have your knife and, when you heal."
"I'm an alien?"
"Not necessarily, I just mean the energy you... Take in and give off isn't something natural, it's almost Asguardian, like Thor. But not quite the same."
"Angelic, it's heavenly power."
"I'll leave that part up to you." He says quietly.
"You're not Christian?"
"I believe in science, and I observe the teachings of Nanak. But that's aside the point. Another part of your power, the part that allows you to change your appearance; seems genetic. Your father worked with chemical weapons before you were born right?"
"Sure."
"That's likely why."
"What about when I'm manifesting?"
"See, now I can't pin point that part. Look-" he shows my what looks like a thermal image of me sitting and manifesting various things.
"The blue is your "angelic" energy. Red is the chemically mutated energy. Black is normal energy."
I watch as my body energy turns blue, with a red surrounding it. Then vise versa. Red and blue also combine and engulf me in purple. And many other combinations. Almost like I'm tapping into both sides at once.
"What is my resting energy? When I'm not doing anything."
"Even weirder."
He pulls up another thermal looking video. Here, the purple and blue seem to be fighting for dominance. But a different energy, a bright white energy clouds my head.
"What does that mean?" I ask.
"I have no idea. But I want to do some different tests. I want to monitor what energy a change with different emotions and when you're thinking about different things."
So we do. I get sticky things all on my chest and temples. He gives me a shot of some kind of relaxer that will make me more sensitive, thus giving better results. Through the glass of the control room, I see Bruce and other bio- engineers. Peering from me to computers and back.
"Okay Keegan, were going to start triggering different emotions in you, don't hold back." I hear Bruce say and I nod.
A door to my right opens and Baby walks through. Obviously they're going for happy or positive. So I let myself hold baby for a while and be happy.
"Next." Bruce says, the door opens and a scientist comes and takes her.
A projector drops from the ceiling and a video plays on the glass in front of me. Lightning and thunder fill my ears. A horrible sense of hopelessness and weakness overcomes me. I can't breath, I'm too afraid that it'll trigger something, I know not what. Frozen in fear, I wait, tensely for Bruce to continue.
"Next."
A new video appears, my dad. I see him smiling, pictures of him with friends, holding me as a child. One of him and my mother. I feel a fat tear roll down my face.
Again, it changes. I see war, gunfire and I hear shouting. American uniforms run into burning buildings and into the line of fire. A deep rage fills me stomach in response to seeing our boys dying. But also an outrageous pride.
Lastly, and worse of all, is my dad again. But this time he's yelling. At me. Telling me I'm not good enough, I'm a disappointment. I find I can't see him anymore, because I've fallen to the ground, screaming and crying.
"Turn it off."
"Dr. we're getting amazing resul-"
"TURN IT OFF! Keegan, Keegan it's alright. It was a simulation. Someone put the dog in there."
Moments later the door opens and Baby stands over me. I hear Bruce argue with the scientist. Then someone comes in, Baby growls and snaps at the intruder.
I just cry. Like a bitch, not even knowing what I'm upset over, except everything. I'm crying for myself and Baby, for Steve and Nat, Sam and Cas and Dean. I'm crying for my sad, pathetic self. At the rate I'm going I'll be dead- or worse- in year.
My emotions begin to dull. Not because I'm calm, I think. Everything starts to be hazy and all I hear is Baby barking.
"Down." I mutter with a last breath.
I have one Hell of a dream. I see Steve, adorn in his Captain America outfit he's so famously know for. Beside him is a rugged looking, long haired stranger with a metal arm. In between them is Tony in the suit.
Tony seems a bit out numbered, given Steve and Mr. Bum are attacking him ruthlessly, working in sync with eachother. Tony falls to a knee, unable to match the 360' hits.
I want to scream at Steve to knock it off, he's an ass but he's your friend, your teammate! Panic fills me and I don't know how to fix this. I've just started piecing this life together, it can't fall apart yet.
Then, in a rush I'm awake again. Bruce, and other doctors run towards me.
"Keegan, what did you see?" Bruce demands.
"A big fucking plot twist."
