"Are you sure we should do this?" "I know we should." Keefe heard voices behind a tree. They sounded... familiar.
He hoped they weren't talking about him... And he hoped-
Suddenly he kneeled onto the ground and started having a coughing fit. A couple seconds, and he couldn't breathe.
Why was he coughing so much? Where was he? Who was he? And why was everything so blurry? Why did he see stars in front of his eyes? Was this some weird human thing?
That's when it all went black.
After what felt like weeks of a dark, dead, dreamless sleep, his eyes focused, and he found himself in a white room with way too many creepy sharp things.
"Who... where..." "Kid! You're awake, thank goodness." "Who are you? Where am I? Why am I here?!" "You're in the hospital, I'm Andrea, and you're here because you stopped breathing at the park. I think it may have been something in the air. You don't seem to be used to the pollution. Did you recently move from... I dunno, Hawaii or something? Do they have pollution?"
There was a beat of silence. "I... I don't know. I don't know where we are. Who am I?" The dark skinned woman's face looked very worried, but she seemed to be trying to sound calm.
"We have no idea. Someone found you unconscious in the park and brought you here. You didn't seem to be waking up, so we decided to wait a while. It's only been a few hours, but someone is outside to see you." "Who?"
"According to her, your mother." "My mother? How did she..." "You know who she is?" "No, but you said it's only been a few hours. How did she find out?" "Seems like you have a very overprotective parental figure." There was a voice coming from the next room. "May I come in?" "Of course, come on over."
A familiar looking woman with blonde hair and ice blue eyes looked down at him. "Evan- oh, my baby! Thank goodness you're alright!" "...Who's Evan?" The woman's face fell. "You, of course." Keefe only gave her a confused look.
"He doesn't seem to remember who he is, or any of the people he knows, but I can definitely see the resemblance. We were about to decide on the foster care arrangements when you called,
and..."
Foster... that word... it sounded familiar somehow. But what- or who- was it relating to? Keefe's - supposedly Evan's - eyes widened. Sophie. Everything came rushing back, but he interpreted the word very different from how she meant it...
"FOSTER'S HERE? I have to get out of here. Right now." "Do you remember something?" "Yes. Everything. And I am not going anywhere with her." Keefe stood up, got off the cot, and jumped out the window. He levitated up above the clouds - thankfully it wasn't too windy - and went back down on the roof of a building.
Now that he remembered all about the tone thing, he wasn't going to talk again, not with anyone around. But the building was empty, and the roof was even emptier. So he whispered, "Foster is looking for me," and looked out on the sunset as he fell into a sleep filled with soft brown eyes.
