"Where is she?" I heard a deep voice say from above us. I looked up to see a man at the top of the cliff. It was a very familiar man and I immediately went back into the water. It was the same man who had tried to hurt me earlier in the day, Mele's father.
I stayed a little far under the water and watched Mele's reaction. She looked panicked and after a few moments of debate, she did something I didn't expect. She jumped in beside me. She almost fell straight into me if I hadn't moved out of the way quickly. I looked at her with a perplexed look. She didn't want to get wet earlier as she had avoided my splashes. Why would she jump in now?
She had her hands over her mouth and she looked around rather quickly. She started to head around the corner. I followed her quickly, I knew that humans were not really meant to be swimming in waters such as these. I knew that , as I helped her, I was going against everything my race stood for. Yet, I didn't seem to care. They abandoned me, my beliefs can go with them.
She tried her best to swim around the corner, but her movements seemed to be somewhat hasty and clumsy. I grabbed her arm swiftly and swam us over to where she was headed. It was where I stayed and watched her the first time she captured my attention.
She had to come up for some air, I let her go free. I spent a while watching those who bring people out of the water. I often stayed away but once the person was out of the water and onto the boat, I was able to peek my head out of the water slightly and watch whatever happened. She took in a few deep breaths of air before turning to me.
"I can't stay here." I didn't know why she was telling me this. I didn't know what she was expecting me to do. It probably was not what I did. I grabbed her arm once again and waited for her to take a deep breath before returning back to the water. I held up my hand and gestured over to where we were heading. I then sped off.
We had to stop a few times, whenever I felt her resist or struggle, I knew to go up to the surface. We saw quite a few intimidating friends as we went. I could feel Mele tensing up slightly the further we got away from land. It didn't take us long at all to get where I wanted to be.
I brought her up to the surface and gestured towards some land. It was very small and rather uninteresting. It was big enough for two people to lie on comfortably and perhaps a bag or two. I helped her up there. She was shivering slightly as the water dripped from her hair and clothes.
"That was...something." She chuckled slightly as she rubbed her hands up and down her arms. "Thank you." she looked around slightly, she seemed nervous. I gave her a polite nod and gestured back to the land. "Oh uh, we can go back later?" She questioned and I gave another nod before sitting next to her again.
"I'm sorry that he did that.", She was looking straight at me, she had her feet in the water and was making patterns with it. "He was always strict about me going to the beach0 ,despite living not too far from it." I was glad that she didn't talk about my kind again. Her father seemed to have a very strong dislike for us and I would rather not go through those negative emotions.
"It is quite stupid though." She continued on talking as though I wasn't really there. "One who doesn't have a voice." She was going to continue talking but was interrupted as I splashed some water rather harshly into her face. Her eyes widened and she spluttered slightly. Her eyes widened slightly and she cleared her throat. "Alright, watch what I'm saying when I'm half-asleep. Got it."
I hadn't really noticed that her eyes were drooping slightly and she was yawning every now and then. I placed a hand over my throat and then poked her in hers. I was soft but she jumped back slightly, I had to catch her so that she didn't fall off. The hard look returned to my face.
"What?" She asked with a confused expression. I threw my hands down by my sides and opened my mouth as though to scream, that's what I wanted to do. I had been told that it was a great way to get rid of stress and frustration. I never really got to experience that. "No need to get frustrated." She tried to soothe me and it only made me more angry. Her voice was comforting and soothing and yet it was mine.
I sighed and raised my hand again, going from my throat to her throat. "My voice?" she furrowed her eyebrows and raised her hand to cover where my finger once was. "What about it?" My shoulders sagged, I wasn't getting anywhere. I looked at her seriously and then raised my hand. Instead of touching her throat I went straight for her forehead.
"Okay I'm taking that as an insult." She sighed and turned away slightly, looking at the waters. "I wish that you could reply to me." I did nothing in response to that, If I were able to reply to her then I wouldn't be so intrigued. I would've just claimed that she had a voice which seemed enchanting and moved on. At least, I hoped that would happen if I were able to talk to her.
I created a fist and then punched what we were sitting on in frustration. Her eyes became startled and she became alert. "Okay, I know this is frustrating. I'm sorry." The apologies weren't really moving the conversation along. "What are you trying to say?"
