07. GREAT PAIN

——

not much have changed since, but with the help of hinata as well as a few sleeping pills, you were able to force yourself to sleep. but each morning, you wake up at your worse.

you would feel like a hollow block or a big stone sits on top of your chest, tears randomly falling down on your cheeks, or sometimes you feel like choking when an unfamiliar pain springs inside you.

you took a sip of a newly brewed coffee before looking at your inbox, no message, no calls- not that you're still expecting.

"y/n, when do you think you'll come back to work? the principal is starting to act suspicious." hinata snapped you back, eyes tearing itself away from the screen of your phone before directing it to your friend.

"i could go tomorrow," you didn't want to continue skipping work because in the first place you are the substitute and yet you're also gone, shamelessly.

hina looked at you warily, "are you sure? no one is forcing you, it's better if you prioritize yourself."

prioritizing yourself? you always had. even in your relationship with mitsuya, you always had to save your own butt, not minding how mitsuya would think and feel. you always tend to only look after your own shit.

shaking your head, you were decided, "i'm okay, hina." but those words does not equate your mental state.

"okay, then. do you want more cookies?" she said, about to stand up to get more chocolate chips when you suddenly jolted, pressing a hand on your cheeks. it stings, as if a strong boxer punched your face.

"hey- what happened?" concern obviously laced her voice. she went to your side, examining the part you were holding so tight. "does it hurts?"

it does. you could even taste a rusty blood inside your mouth. but what? you didn't even do something, why would you feel a pang? and why would it bleed?

"did you bite your tongue?"

"no?"

since there was no explanation, you decided to ignore it, like how you did when you felt your heart squeezed once again.

-

done with today's pile of work, you stretched your arms, peeking over your lashes at the students enthusiastically going out of the room, bags secured at their back.

and there, the three boys approached you again,- not with a smug, but with a grim expression plastered across their faces, "where is your boyfriend, miss y/n?"

you didn't dare to answer them, you just took your things and quickly packed them inside your bag.

"is he going to pick you up again?" persistent as they may be, one of them grabbed your bag to stop you from walking out.

"he won't," you answered, eyes dark.

"is that so?" they were intimidated when they heard your voice, blunt and a tone lower. finally, they backed off and that was your cue to leave, walking through the hallway with the fastest speed you can go.

coming home was never a bad idea for you before, but with mitsuya gone, it was noxious. memories etched on each side of your home spreads like toxic.

you sat down on your study table, idling with your pen and paper, finalizing your lesson plan with an empty stomach. as you were writing, a piercing pain was felt on the tip of your finger causing you to yank your pen away... staring at your hand with horror.

another unexplainable pain, it was the same as when a needle stab your skin- even if you weren't holding any pin or needle. you gasp as you watch the blood slowly swells out of the tiny wound.

it wasn't even a paper cut, you sighed. blood smudging at the corner of your paper works.

the next morning almost killed you again, as per usual. it didn't even shock you when you woke up only to cry-vomit in the shower room, lungs deprived of oxygen. even the warm water felt cold in your freezing- diminishing emotions.

you were less active at work, even the students felt the change in your teaching style. the whole duration of the class felt dull, it doesn't even feel like an art class.

"bye, students." you bid goodbye, not waiting for them to answer back as you walk out of the room.

the moment you were outside the school gate, a familiar car was parked outside and as you thought, draken was there, leaning against the hood.

"y/n..." he called out, a visible bruise near his jaw caught your attention making you twitch.

"hm?" you came closer to him but keeping a respectable distance, about two meters.

"... can we talk?"

you squinted your eyes at the cemented path walk lamenting as to why you chose to entertain him and not pretend you didn't saw him. a sigh escaped your lips before you gave in, nodding.

he invited you inside his car and you accepted, sitting on the shotgun seat just beside him.

"how are you?"

"how am i?" craning your neck towards him, you raise a brow at him, couldn't believe his question. "should i say i'm fine? we broke up and you expect me to be so happy about it?"

"y/n, i-"

"i'm not blaming you for this draken. it was a mistake, we both know that- what did you even come here for?"

draken felt a tinge on his chest, gripping on the steering wheel, "how is your red string?"

that was when your eyes flicked towards your fingers, a black string wrapped around it. honestly, it looks so ugly almost couldn't picture out how beautiful it was before.

"black, dull, lifeless... severed."

"as i thought."

"why? what do you mean?"

he looked at you for a moment before he slumped back on his seat, raising his hand in the air, "my string are black, too. it all happened when emma died."

all of your friends, including you were aware that he and emma- mikey's late sister as well as an old friend- were soulmates. draken was the most devastated back then, he couldn't even eat, you were a witness.

and the saddest part is that they couldn't even sort out their relationship. as far as you know, draken couldn't confess until emma's last breath, so all he did was mutter 'i like you' a hundred times on emma's burial.

"mitsuya's not dead!"

"i know," draken quickly countered, clenching his hand before withdrawing it on the air, "do you know why it turned black?"

your forehead crease, no answer on mind. "no, why?"

"it's either one of the soulmate's pair died, deprived of emotion, or was utterly hurt," you thought you couldn't be broken anymore but hearing his explanation made the remaining piece of your heart shatter.

you didn't say a word- you couldn't say a word.

"were you in a greater pain than mitsuya?" draken asked, making you numb and dumb all at once.
