Ch. 14 Like A Superstar

*NICOLE'S POV*

Dakota is making me try on dresses for HER to wear to the dance.

"Okay, come here." Se said and I walked in the room. "Turn. Hmm."

"It's just not girly enough." Maiya told her.

"But imagine it on me. Girlier, right?" Dakota asked. Really?

"Hmm. Maybe." Maiya mumbled.

"Why don't you just try it on yourself?" I asked annoyed.

"Stop whining. Here." Se threw a dress at me. "We have three hours before the dance. Go change." She said and I did. I heard mumbled speaking but could still make out some of what they were saying.

"So what was it like to have reporters on your lawn?" Maiya asked.

"Exciting. But I need my privacy, too." Dakota explained.

"We all watched your sister on TV, and she looked wacko." Maiya said.

"Really?"

"Yeah! It was so weird the way she made up that story about meeting Luke Hemmings." Maiya scoffed. "She is so pathetic."

I walked in the room and stared at them before pushing past and walking outside.

"Oops. Do you think she heard that?" Maiya asked.

"Maiya. You're an idiot." Dakota said and I heard footsteps follow me.

"Go away." I told her.

"No. I actually live here." She joked.

"What do you want?" I asked rudely.

"Go with me to the dance. Mmm-hmm." She suggested. Yeah, that's not gonna make anything better.

"I thought I was pathetic and embarrassing." I told her making her look guilty.

"Only if you actually dance. So don't." She said and I cracked a smile. "Come on. Come on. Let's make you pretty enough to be my sister."

-

Dakota and I walked into the dance together. I'm really unsure about this dress, i just don't think it suits me.

"You look good. Don't slouch." She told me.

"You know, Kota, in a weird way, you're a good sister." I told her and she smiled then turned to look back at the dance floor. Maiya walked up to her and started to drag her away.

"Pretend you don't know me." Dakota said walking away.

"Lame." I heard Maiya say. I shrugged it off, walking onto the dance floor, passing a bunch of people who were dancing.

Then the music stopped, and everyone looked around confused. That was until a familiar figure appeared on stage.

"Oh, my God!" A girl gasped and everyone went crazy, cheering.

Luke cleared his throat before speaking,

"Nicole Harwood? There's some things I forgot to say to you back in California." He said. Everyone gasped and looked at me. Yeah, now you believe that I know him. Asses. They all cleared a path for me to the stage, and Luke looked directly at me. Music started playing. He's going to sing.

"Can't blame you
For thinking
That you never really knew me at all
I tried to
Deny you
But nothing ever
made me feel so wrong
I thought I was protecting you
from everything that I go through
But I know that we got lost
along the way
Here I am
With all my heart
I hope you understand
I hope you understand
I know I let you down
But I'm never gonna make
that mistake again
You brought me closer
to who I really am
So come take my hand
I want the world to see
What you mean to me
What you mean to me" he sang, standing right in front of me. Everyone applauded him then became silent. They all just stared at us.

"What did you think? That you could just come here and sing to me and everything would be fine?" I asked him.

"Yes." He said and I stared at him in disbelief. "No? No. No." He shook his head.

"Well, which is it?" I asked impatiently.

"I just came to tell you I was wrong about everything, especially about you." He said.

"Don't you think you're a little late? Come on. Everyone here thinks I was lying." I told him. Just then Libby Lam and her camera crew ran in and she held a mic to Luke's face.

"But I'm the one who lied." He said, then took the mic. "I lied about knowing Nicole Harwood. 'Cause the truth is I know Nicole Harwood. Nicole Harwood's a terrible navigator and a know-it-all, but she's honest. When she makes a promise, she keeps it. She understands me like no one else does. And I'm crazy about her." he said, then dropped the mic by his side just to have Libby hold it up again. Can't she just leave?!

"Nicole, I'm so sorry. I know that I hurt you and I will never do anything like that again. Just, please, forgive me." Luke said. I could tell he was honest about it. Everyone 'aww'ed at that and applauded.

"Go away. Now." He said to the camera crew.

"Oh. Okay. Get out of here. Move it." Libby said to her crew and they left. Music started plying again and just as I was about to kiss Luke, a noise interrupted us. I turned to see Dakota standing there looking at Luke.

"Luke, this is my sister, Dakota. Dakota, this is Luke Hemmings." I said and he took her hand.

"Dakota. Do you wanna dance with me?" He said, laying on that Hemmings charm.

"Uh-huh." She said, then fell back. Ashton caught her.

"I think I got this one, Lukey." He smiled, carrying Dakota away. Luke and I turned to each other and started dancing slowly. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he wrapped his around my waist.

"You didn't have to come all the way to Misssissippi for this." I told him.

"Yeah, I did. It's not cool to ask a girl out on the phone." He smiled. "So, will you go out with me? On a real date." He asked me.

"Do I have to wear a disguise?" I asked and he laughed.

"No." He smiled.

"Do you?"

"No."

"Then, yeah. I'd really like that." I smiled.

"Oh, I almost forgot. For you." He said, taking his sunglasses out of his jacket pocket.

"You remembered." I said, putting them on. "How do I look?" I asked posing. He laughed.

"Like a superstar." He said.
