Avery

As I sat there finishing my makeup in front of my mirror, I let out a sigh; I do not want to go to school today. I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to feel nervous and/or excited, but honestly, I feel nothing. There's no big deal really; today's only the start of another very long school year. I'm one of the most popular girls in school since I'm head of the school council, but I think if it wasn't for that, no one would know my name. Well, that's a lie. My twin brother, Aiden, is the perfect man for all the ladies in school. I don't get what they see in him. He's not attractive; he just has blonde hair and blue eyes and for some reason, girls think he's hot? Yeah, right. Also, he's a complete jerk. Out of every girlfriend he's ever had (and there's quite a few), I'd say there's only one he actually liked. The rest were mainly just for popularity or to prove someone wrong. Me on the other hand, well, I've never had a boyfriend, unless you count going on one 'date' with Axel when we were in Year 1, but even that was just because our parents were super close friends. Actually, I'm still super close with him, but it's totally platonic. Axel, Aiden and I all hang out everyday after school in room 52: the music room. "Avery, sweetheart, your father wants to say goodbye to you." Mother called.
"Of course, Mother. I'll be down now." As much as I love my family, living in this house is intimidating; it always feels like there's a noose around my neck, and someone's constantly standing there, ready to remove the platform beneath my feet at any moment. I opened my door, and rushed out onto the landing. Aiden's room had been awfully quiet this morning, so impulsively, I went to check on him. Thankfully, he wasn't dead. However, he was still asleep with 10 minutes until we had to leave. I took a pillow from the end of his bed and threw it at his messy head of hair. Groaning, he sat up with his eyes still closed. "What the hell, Avery?"
"Wake up, dork. You have 10 minutes."
"It's Sunday, go away."
"Uh, no it's not. It's Monday, and you're going to school, so I suggest you get your lazy butt out of bed... now!"
"Go away, Avery." I rolled my eyes and left his room to go downstairs. Brothers (and I think boys in general) are such hard work. Honestly, I wish I had a sister, or perhaps no sibling at all. When I got to the bottom step, I saw Mother and Father waiting together by the door. "There's my girl! You look stunning, as always." Father said. Was he drunk? I've never seen him in a mood this good. I narrowed my eyes. "Thanks."
"Where's your brother?" he asked.
"Coming now, I'm sure he won't be long." I smiled as he slowly nodded his head. Aiden and I definitely look more like Mother; we have nothing in common with our father, and I think that's a rather good thing. Father shouted his goodbyes up to Aiden before kissing Mother and I on the cheek. "Be safe." I muttered. We waited in the doorway and watched as he slammed the car door shut. "There's toast on the table if you want it."
"Thank you, Mother." Just then, Aiden came rushing down the stairs. "What's a herd of baby elephants doing in our house?" I teased.
"Will you just shut up? You're the most annoying little sister ever."
"Hey! We're the same age. Isn't that the whole point of being twins?"
"I was born 4 minutes and 27 seconds before you, so I'm older." He took a piece of toast from my plate and stuffed it in his mouth.
"You're revolting." I said as I observed him in disgust.
"You're younger."
"Whatever, I'm leaving, and if you're not ready, you can go to school on your own."
"Are you meeting your boyfriend Axel?"
"He's not my boyfriend!"
"Take a chill pill, little sis. I'm kidding."
"Why would you joke about your best friend dating your sister? That's just straight up weird."
"Relax, I know he's not your type, and you're definitely not his."
"Alright then, since you're so smart, what is my type?" I asked as we stepped out of the front door.
"Ohhh, I see what you're doing. You don't know what your type is, so you're trying to get ideas from me."
"I am not-"
"Yeah, okay. Whatever. Shut up. Your voice is giving me a headache."
