"Why?"
Was the first word that came out of Denki's mouth. Both teenagers were dangling from their ankles with their hair hanging in the water. His voice was quiet and Y/N could tell he was desperately trying to keep his voice even.
"Because I swore to you," Y/N responded, "On that day you showed me the article of the euthanized dog. I promised you that I wouldn't let you die alone."
Denki untied their ankles and they crashed into the water.
"You could've lived, Y/N. I-" he shuddered, "You didn't have to die with me-"
"I don't regret it!" Y/N choked out, tears spilling over and trailed down her face, adding to the river water as she clambered out, "I don't regret jumping after you at all!"
"Then why are you still here?" Tears were staining Denki's cheeks as he whipped around to face her, "You still wanted to live, didn't you?"
"Not without you."
Denki paused as he watched his lover try to collect herself.
"I'm here because I couldn't protect you. I'm here because I didn't reach you. If I had just made my steps a little bigger or if I responded a second faster, this never would've happened. I'm here because I feel guilty!"
The yellow-haired boy threw his head back in a disbelieving laugh before wrapping his arms around the girl, "That makes the two of us, then."
His shoulder shook with sobs as he cried into Y/N's shoulders, "I'm sorry I dragged you into this. I'm sorry I wasn't strong enough. Please don't hate me. I tried."
Y/N harshly slapped the top of Denki's head, causing him to flinch, but he didn't let go.
"I could never hate you, Kami. Especially for a decision I made."
Wiping his tears, he cracked his familiar smile as looked up at the sky, "So then, I think we should be leaving soon?"
"Yeah," she sighed, "Probably."
"Then how about you dance with me one last time before we go out?"
His hand was extended out to her, and a smile was drawn onto his face. His pale skin sparkled under the sunlight, and his wet clothes stuck close to his body.
Yellowing leaves flew past him as if they were beckoning her closer.
At that moment, Kaminari Denki looked like a fallen angel who had his wings clipped off.
He pulled her close to him and set his hand delicately on her waist, "I can't believe I forgot you, sunshine."
She smiled into Denki's chest as they waltzed along with the flowers and river grass. Despite being wet, cold, and dead, they were happy.
"Kami, you're leaving already," Y/N mumbled, as she slowly felt the warmness leave her embrace.
"You're shining like the sun, dollface," Denki smiled, "I swear to you, I'll find you in every lifetime and the next. I'll love you until I disappear from the earth completely."
He took her pointer finger and pressed it to his lips, "I promise I'll know who you are."
Tears fell out of her eyes as she died for a second time and soon, their bodies vanished mid-dance, never to be returned to the world after.
