"The age of heroes," The young boy read aloud. The ducks and pigeons had gathered around him to listen to him practice for his reading class for the next day, "An era where superpowers referred to as 'quirks' helped make the world both a better and a worse place. It was a magnificent time of inventions and knowledge, sculpting the world we know today, a thousand years later."
He looked up from the book and tilted his head toward the sun, "I wish I could've been a part of that world. I want superpowers."
The sun illuminated across his face, making the dark red birthmark running vertical to his lips all the way down to his chin stand out against his pale skin. He had always been bullied for it, but his mother said that it couldn't be helped, since he was born with it, and that it made him unique.
But the yellow-haired boy disagreed. He hated thinking he was born with such an ugly thing for no reason. So he tells people that he kissed the sun, and it burnt him in retaliation. It made his scar feel more flattering.
He nestled the book in his bag and left it on the bench as he bound to the playground. He climbed onto a slide, and hurled himself down it, giggling with glee.
His cries of merriment soon turned into yells of panic once he realized he wasn't slowing down. A small girl at the end of the slide looked up after hearing his yell, her eyes widening once she saw the boy barreling toward her.
He crashed into her with a loud 'oomph' and they both fell onto the rubber-laden ground, panting slightly.
"I'm really sorry," the boy said, helping the girl up. She dusted off her pink skirt and shook her head, "It's okay."
"Seriously. I'm so-"
Her pointer finger slapped itself on his lips, stopping him from speaking. At her touch, the birthmark on his lip began searing, with such intensity that he grabbed her wrist and twisted her palm face up.
And there it was.
A red birthmark in the same shape as his lips was imprinted onto her finger, right where she touched him.
"Is something wrong?" she cocked her head. The boy looked up, and shook his head, "Nope."
He looked into her serious eyes and he felt his heartbeat speed up.
The sun that burned him was standing right in front of him.
"Say, what's your name?"
She fidgeted with her thumbs, "It's not a traditional Japanese name, so don't make fun of it."
"I won't! Foreign names are cool!"
She took a deep breath, "Sunny. My name is Sunny."
"What really? I was going to say you reminded me of the sun!"
"Really? I'm not that cheerful or bright," she muttered. The boy shrugged, "Even the sun can get covered by clouds! From today, you can be my sunshine! I'll get rid of the clouds for you!"
She cracked a little smile, "Okay!
...Kami."
