(William's POV)
"...it's about time I revealed my cards."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Illuminated by a large overhead light the body lay there—grey and decomposing. A rigid, old woman in a white lab coat stood near the examination table. She didn't look up to acknowledge my presence when I stepped into the surgical room with clear urgency.
"Care to enlighten me William? Your guards ran off with that boy before I could even mention a word."
The doctors' slender fingers had been firmly coiling around a pen she was using to scribble sentences on a clipboard before Jake and I arrived. The slim oval glasses she had on were teetering on the tip of her beak-like nose. Her usual neat, greying hair was messily tossed on her head in a crooked clip. Likely a result of the unexpected arousal she had this late at night.
"Good evening Katherine. Apologies for raising you at this hour. As you saw, there was another escape tonight." Her thin lips sunk like they always did. After witnessing so many deaths she has yet to grow out of the ability to sympathize with every victim she examines. I envy her for it, I myself have become desensitized to such sights.
"That's what I had suspected. Although, she wasn't bitten like the other two we found. Cause of death was a fatal puncture wound through her heart and no excessive blood draw. Why has the culprits capture method changed this time?" She asks pointing her pen at the notes she'd been taking.
"We had an unprecedented incident occur while she was on the loose." I told her evading further explanation. It would only unnecessarily complicate things if I mentioned my new human recruit. I needed her introduction to be on my terms and not in a courtroom. Otherwise things would get messy.
"An incident? You need to be more specific. I'm writing a report on her death to the committee and they want the entire story. You know that." She recites firmly. Her aged and wrinkled expression was as stern as a pillar.
"I'm well aware. What I need is to gather some more evidence before I give you all of the information regarding her case. All I can say, at the moment, is that I was able to track down the person who was behind these escapes." She pauses midway of her writing to glance up at me. Eyebrows raised in interest.
"Oh? And how much more evidence do you need? I cannot leave her body unreported. The committee will know she is missing by tomorrow mornings roll call." She nagged tapping the pen impatiently on the clipboard. But I knew that my news has taken some heavy weight and paperwork off of her shoulders.
"Don't be so tense Katherine. I have enough evidence to present to the committee when they start their documenting. I only need an hour to confirm my findings. Maybe even less." I reassured her.
"Don't fault me for being thorough." She huffed under her breath. "Was it that unruly looking boy you dragged in? Oh- What was his name, Trevor? He arrived here only a couple months ago. The DNA from the bite marks does not match his profile." She scours through her notes full of data pertaining to the eight previous escape cases.
"He may not have been the one who kidnapped the newborns but he was the one who let them cross the border. If I could have some time to speak with him I believe I can get him to reveal who was behind these attacks." Her gaze shifts where I could recognize that my coaxing had made her take a moment reconsider. She clears her throat before replying.
"Why would a young boy like him do this? He was always a little hot-headed but he didn't seem like the type to hurt others. At any rate, I suppose I can postpone the report until tomorrow morning. But that's all. Don't make me get the committee involved." She mutters eyeing me down carefully by pushes up her glasses for a moment before letting them slip back down to their usual perch.
