Present Day

"So not only are you my doctor, but you're my lawyer now too." I ask raising an eyebrow at him.

Crowley was sitting across from me in the visitation room a piece of murky fingerprint-stained glass separating us.

He speaks into the phone "What can I say? I like to help people."

"Right. So. Would you like to explain what's going on, attorney? Murder? Is this a joke?"

"It's not a joke Emily. You murdered someone."

A can't help but snicker. "I think I would remember doing something like that. Get Nathan on the phone."

"You killed the newborn." Something about the way his eyes soften strikes a nerve. You would think the leader of a bunch of bloodsuckers would be on their side. Every time he looked at me it felt as if he knew something about me that I didn't. I didn't like it.

"The newborn? You mean the thing that chased after me through the forest so that they could suck me dry. That newborn."

"It was self-defense, I know. But you weren't authorized to hunt in our zone. What you did wasn't exactly legal."

"I was going to get bit! What was I supposed to do? I'm a hunter! It's my job to protect myself against you!"

I didn't think it was possible to look at me with that much pity. And I've received my fair share of pitiful stares after my parents were killed. My grip on the phone tightens to match the scowl I couldn't help but give him.

"We will get you out of this. I promise. For now, just follow along with everything I say. The council's procedures aren't that much different from what humans go through."

"This is bullshit!"

"Stay calm. They need to see that you aren't a threat."

The door leading to the visitation room opens behind Crowley before I could make the decision to chuck the phone against the glass.

"Good luck with that." Jake enters without sparing a single glance.

"Have you prepared the witnesses?" Crowley asks him.

"Yeah. Yeah. Cillian is on his way and the little squeaker said he would gladly help if I promised not to cut out his tongue and shove it up his...I almost forgot I was in the presence of a lady." He mocks me. I roll my eyes.

"Good. You should also prepare to be on the stand. The prosecution is known to ask leading questions. Don't be fooled."

"And risk having a murderer get locked behind bars. I would never." He replies with the sarcasm I am now used to hearing from him.

"Do not forget that she came here on my order. We are not safe from blame. The Council could ban me from partnering with the hunters. We need their intel, especially this close to the battle. Take this seriously." He warns him.

Jakob clenches his jaw before giving him a reluctant nod of understanding.

Crowley turns back to speak to me on the phone, his expression instantly gentler. A frustrated sigh escapes me.

"Everything will be alright. Let me do the talking."

Something tells that talking isn't going to be enough to get me out of this mess.
