I forgot to ask the girl's name before she left, but it was alright. I would ask her when she got back. She had been oddly friendly towards me, when everyone else seemed to either avoid me, or be frustrated with me for whatever reason. I was still fairly clueless, I knew the plan, and I knew why we had to act it out, but I didn't know where I was headed or what was going to happen to me. Just that whatever was out there was better than in here.
Right now, Monica and another girl I didn't know were tying a rope they constructed to the curtain rod just above the window. They were being awfully quiet about it too, worried that someone might hear them. All I could do was stand and watch, hoping for the best. One of the boys was getting pretty close to prying the window open, struggling to be as silent about it.
The girls had finally secured the rope, and were now just waiting for their escape route to open. Monica looked tired of waiting, and pushed one of them aside, taking the matter into her own hands. She opened it with ease, and the rest of the group was impressed.
"Okay, Abby, hand me the rope," she whispered, holding her hand out. The other girl grabbed the bundle of tied together laundry, and placed it in Monica's hands. She faced the windowsill, and tossed the rest of the rope down the outside wall of the building. She leaned over a bit, and sighed with relief. "It goes all the way down."
Some tension was released from the room, I could tell that had been an issue that had been worried about more than once. Monica turned her back around to look at all of us now. "There's only one more thing I need from all of you. I don't trust the curtains to hold me, so just take hold of the rope, all of you. You won't have to grip hard since there's so many of you, just don't drop me." she was half-joking, but I was serious about this. I didn't think she was going to fall, since she had calculated out a good part of this plan, or at least this part, right?
Everyone started to get into a cluster around the rope, and we all managed to find a place to put our hands on. Monica got closer and closer to the edge of the window, and grabbed the rope with all she could. She looked very emotional, like she was going to burst, similar to the other girl when she found out I had supposedly lost my memories.
Monica was afraid.
"Wish me luck. Oh, God..." she murmured the second part to herself, and slipped over the side. She firmly planted her feet against the wall, and we all had a strong hold on her. Once she was out, she knew she wasn't going to fall. She gazed up at all of us, laughing a little bit in astonishment at how this was actually working.
All her steps down were slow and cautious, but we had time. Better to be careful then have her fall. I couldn't see her for the rest of the trip, so we all waited until we could feel a change in weight from what we were holding. Eventually, someone up front leaned forward a bit to look down, and he let go of the rope.
"Holy shit... she made it," he said breathlessly. A few relieved sighs and gasps released from the small crowd. I couldn't see much of what was going on, but based on their reactions, she was doing well. But then tension began to rise as she made her way to the left, where the guards were. I was told that Monica was strong, and she would be able to fend off these guards with ease, but the room was still very unsteady.
Until a few people up front raised their fists in victory. It became clear that Monica had won the fight, and was managing to open the door. One of them stepped out of the way, so I took the opportunity to step up and see what she was doing. She was waving up to all of us, like nothing had even happened. However, I could see her arm shaking. I believe she was still on edge from the rush of the fight. Then she turned back and went around the corner to open the door for us. Now, all we had to wait for was the key card.
