Charlie watched as you slept peacefully, a small frown on his lips, brows knit deep in thought as he did so.The morning sun leaked through his bedroom window, casting against your small frame that was swaddled up in the cotton sheets of his bed. He thought you looked truly beautiful.
But he was conflicted, and the high from last night had worn down. He couldn't stop looking at you, the moment from yesterday playing over in his mind like a broken record.
He sat on the lawn chair, beer bottle cold and half-empty in his hand as he watched you in the pool, playing and laughing with his son and his friend in that tight little bikini of yours.
Caught up in looking at you, he hadn't even realized Nicole and her boyfriend — what was his name? Carter?- had walked up to him, hand in hand.
It was a knife in Charlie's gut when he saw how happy Nicole had looked, a big smile plastered on those lips of hers that once belonged to him. And Carter, he had a smile too, but one that had more meaning behind it — a double meaning.
"Hi Charlie, I thought I should introduce Carter to you, since you were so curious about him over the phone." She said, almost in spite.
Charlie was stoic for a moment before forcing a smile onto his face. He didn't bother taking the hand that Carter offered out in a hand shake, a smug smirk tugging on his lips when Carter's empty hand dropped back to his side.
"Right." Charlie simply hissed under his breath.
"Is that your girlfriend over there? The one in the bikini?" Carter abruptly asks, causing Charlie's eyes to snap up towards him. Nicole remains silent at his side, wanting an answer just as much as Carter did.
Charlie swallowed hard. "No," he grit, "that is Henry's babysitter, and I'm twice her age." He lied through his teeth.
He wasn't sure why he couldn't just admit to what had been going on between him and you. What he deemed to be a "one time thing" quickly turned into more then that, and now he suffered the consequences.
Not only that, if Charlie even was to admit to his liking and sexual relationship with you, Nicole would make him fire you, and that wasn't what him or you needed at the moment.
"Oh, are you sure? I saw you getting pretty close to her earlier, before she got in the pool. How old even is she?" Carter continued to press.
Nicole was sending worried glances to her boyfriend now. "Carter, please—" she began, quickly cut off by him.
"No, let him answer, Nicole." He urged, shaking his head at Charlie's ex-wife.
Charlie's grip was unbelievably tight on his beer bottle now he was surprised the glass hadn't shattered in his hand by this point. He almost prayed that it would so he would have an excuse to stop talking to this guy.
Carter clearly had something against Charlie, and Charlie had something against Carter as well. Charlie thought Carter had no right to say the things he had said to Henry.
"I don't think this is any of your concern. I think the only thing you should be worried about is how you speak to my son from now on. I know what you're up to." Charlie spat, anger riddling through him.
Carter was taken back by his comment. Nicole's head snapped towards her boyfriend, brows furrowed. "What is Charlie talking about? What did you say to Henry?" She asks, confused.
