Hizashi didn't know what to make of the scene in front of him. His husband had come home, not bruised up front a street fight or with the satisfied expression that comes with catching the villain, but with a teenager.
He was holding the boy on his hip like you would a petulant toddler. As Hizashi took in the scene before him, he couldn't help but notice the boy's features, barely visible beyond the grime. Pink hair and black eyes.
It was the thief.
"Turns out our 'man' isn't so much of a man at all. He hasn't told me how old he is or his name, but I think its safe to say I'll be calling Hana in the morning." Shota explained. Hana was Shinso's social worker and a wonderful older woman who specialized in heroes and the foster care system.
Finally processing what he was seeing, Hizashi jumped into action. He held out his hand for the boy to take. "Hello, my name is Yamada Hizashi. I'm married to this grump you're being manhandled around by. I wish we could have met in better circumstances, but I'm pleased to make your acquaintance all the same.".
Before Shota could warn him Hizashi met the boy's eyes. Shota could tell the instant the boy took control of his husband from the pink flash in the his eyes. Immediately he used his quirk to disable the boys ability, sending Hizashi stumbling back a few steps out of confusion.
The boy let out a pitiful whine and clutched his skull. 'Quirk overuse' Shota realized. "I didn't get a chance to warn you, his quirk is like Toshi's but it works with eye contact. Or at least that's what I think." He explained, hoisting the boy up higher and into a more comfortable position.
Hizashi just nodded and turned back to the boy, staring at the space between his eyes instead of into the abyssal pools. "You shouldn't just use your quirk on people like that, although I wont fault you if you just lost control. I used to have that problem when I was your age." He said, a soft smile on his face "Now, you're going to be staying with us for a little while, it'd be great to get your name before I draw you a bath.".
----- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------- ------
The blonde man's words sounded muffled to the teen. His head was pounding and everything seemed to be too much. The fabric of his clothes itched horribly. It burned his skin like an inferno. The lighting was too harsh and the blonde man-Zashi? Was that his name? Whatever it was his brain was too loud, Miki shouldn't have tried to control it.
The only comfort he got was from the black haired man's heartbeat. It was steady and the man's body was warm. He hadn't touched another human in forever and deep down he must have been craving some sort of physical affection. Someone said something about 'your name', he couldn't tell who. His vision was too blurry.
His fuzzy, overwhelmed brain betrayed his much more street smart normal brain and answered them.
"Miki...".
His voice was soft and broken from screaming. He hated sounding like that. It was pathetic. But the couple in front of him only seemed endeared by it.
The world went almost black after that. Everything seemed to pass him by like he was watching a movie. Miki couldn't really remember what movies were like. The years of living on the streets and overusing his quirk had damaged parts of his memory, but he was pretty sure this is what watching a movie felt like. The black haired man carried his limp body into the apartment.
Walking through the front door was like being enveloped in a second hug. It was so warm and reminded him of his grandmother's house. It terrified him. Oh how their soft touches reminded him of her.
For the first time since getting caught he felt like crying. It was sickly sweet. Like something out of a fairytale. He heard water running in the distance and briefly wondered if this was all some cruel trick, but he couldn't bring himself to stop the tears of relief, being overwhelmed and the memory of his grandmother.
Shota observed the boy-Miki as Hizashi placed a bath bomb in the water. He was pretty sure it was just a trick of the light but somehow even the tears couldn't make light shine in the boy's eyes. It probably had something to do with having an eye contact based quirk, Shota would know, but he couldn't help but think how sad it was. He was pretty sure, positive even, that the boy would look better if they could get his eyes to sparkle. Sparkle like Hitoshi's when he told him his quirk didn't make him a villain, sparkle like Hizashi's on their wedding day. He wanted to see the boy happy.
It was an almost overwhelming amount of parental instinct that rushed though him in that moment. Hizashi was shushing the boy, wiping his tears with a tissue as he took the layers of sweaters and thin coats off the boy's thin frame.
Seeing the boy more clearly only made things worse. He was so unimaginably thin. His clothes were caked in mud and dirt. Pretty much every exposed part of skin looked irritated and rubbed raw. Hizashi made a wounded noise at the sight, meeting his husband's eyes so the two could exchange a horrified look.
"How did you hurt your skin like that Miki?" The blonde asked softly, reaching into the medicine cabinet for some skin creams. Miki's eyes, although lazy and unable to focus, looking in Hizashi's general direction.
"Don't touch me. Hurts..." Was all he pleaded, more tears pooling in his eyes. Both hero's immediately felt their faces and hearts drop.
"We would never do something you're not comfortable with unless absolutely necessary. If you don't want us to touch you we wont." Aizawa said, placing Miki in a sitting position on the toilet lid so he could meet his eyes. Well, not really meet his eyes, but the same idea. "But you're going to get sick if you don't get clean soon. All we're asking is that you wash up. We'll wait outside the bathroom if you want, but the door has to be left open since your mobility isn't great right now. Is that okay with you?".
The boy didn't seem to register what he said for a good moment before nodding. Shota breathed a sigh of relief and let go of the boy before turning to Hizashi. "We'll be outside. If you need anything, anything at all, don't hesitate to ask or to just knock on something loud enough and we'll both come running." Hizashi joked before waving goodbye to the boy and closing the door.
------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------
"What happened to him?".
Aizawa barely had time to think before Hizashi was staring into his eyes, looking like someone had murdered a kitten in front of his eyes. Shota couldn't blame him for looking that way, he felt it internally even if he didn't outwardly display his emotions.
"I don't know." He admitted, almost shamefully so. "I found him sleeping on the streets, huddled in moldy blankets. When I tried to confront him he used his quirk to control me, didn't get very far with that, but when I caught him he just kicked and screamed." Shota hoped he didn't look as shell shocked as he felt, recalling the moment. "Zashi I sat there for 15 minutes and all he did was struggle. His name was the first word he's said, besides what he said to Hitoshi earlier.".
Hizashi looked heartbroken. "You know what we have to do, right? We both know he's not a runaway, or at least not one who got in one fight with their parents and left." He said, looking up at Shota. The black haired man sighed and nodded.
"I'll call Hana in the morning. We'll have it sorted out before you can even say 'legal guardianship'.".
