Chapter 10

 David's POV

Oh my gosh, I'd never done anything like this before! All the nerves were jumbling up in my body and I felt like I was at clown school all over again, about to go on stage for a big performance.

HUMPH. No. I was going to do this, goshdarnit! What was there to be afraid of? I took a deep breath in and thought of nature, which was always guaranteed to calm my nerves. I stood up tall, just like a majestic pine tree, and marched forwards to Gwen.

"Birch, oak, pine, brassosophrolaeliocattleya, redwood, sequoia," I quietly muttered under my breath.

Suddenly, Gwen's head spun around towards me, looking at me before I was ready, which took me by surprise. I jumped back and let out a tiny yelp. Gosh darn, she must have heard my footsteps. Quickly, I readjusted myself and my wig, and cleared my throat.

"Hey... David?", Gwen said. She looked me up and down, raising a confused eyebrow at me. "What's with the get-up?", she asked.

"Errr... nothing!", I said quickly. I wasn't really sure what to say about that. I rocked back and forth on my feet nervously "So, uh, about something I wanted to ask you..."

Gwen's brilliant purple eyes gazed gently into my own, and I felt such a strong sensation of love and longing. I just couldn't hold it in anymore. "Gwen, will you go on a date with me??" I blurted.

I heard all the campers gasp from a nearby bush and Max shushing. I suppressed a chuckle, knowing that Max was definitely filming the entire thing with my phone and was trying to keep it a secret.

Gwen's POV

Oh my gosh! Could this really be happening? I'd never been asked on a date before... and with DAVID? The man hardly knows what alcohol is.

I secretly wanted to burst out with a definite "YES!" and throw myself into his arms, But... I didn't want to be too enthusiastic, because judging from David's clown get-up, the kids were definitely in on this and probably spying on us. Those little bastards, trying to set him up like that. Good thing he still looked super cute in the clown stuff though...

Instead, I replied with a lukewarm-ish "sure", and gave him a teensy smile. I think it was enough to satisfy him, because he jumped up and down and said, "Oh really? Golly, thanks Gwen!" His smile was so contagious and I felt a smile beginning to spread on my face as well.

I then realized that there was something in his hand that he was fisting. The thing looked like it was suffocating in his clutch.

"Uh, David, what's with that?", I asked, pointing.

"Oh, um, that's a gift", he replied. "Just for you", he quickly added, smiling slightly.

He handed me a banana that was smooshed.

Definitely the kids' idea.

I took the banana from his hand and chuckled "Aw, thanks!"

"Silly me, I forgot all about it! Apparently it's what the kids call 'the hottest trend!'" David breathed a sigh of relief and looked up at the sky, inhaling.

"You were nervous for this, weren't you?", I asked playfully. I elbowed his stomach lightly and he laughed.

He blushed a bit. "Yeah..." he replied sheepishly. "But it was so worth it!" He smiled his adorable smile. "So, how about our date tomorrow at 7:00 PM?"

"Sounds great."

"Oh golly, I'm just so excited!" David exclaimed with twinkles in his eyes. "Wanna go to the cabin to relax before our next camp-tivity?"

He extended his hand and I took it as a signal to give him mine. Blushing profusely, I placed my hand in his and he closed his fingers around mine tightly, and together we walked to the counselors' cabin.

"By the way, did you really think listening to kids on dating advice was a good idea?"

Max's POV

After Gwen and David were out of sight, I dropped the phone and turned back around.

"Oh my FUCKING God! I can't actually believe he DID that!"

"Yeah, I was half-expecting him to chicken out, but things are finally starting to get going!", Neil exclaimed.

"Wait, but what are we supposed to do now?", Nikki asked.

"Nikki, what do you THINK we're gonna do?", I replied. "We're gonna spy on them. David said that their date is tomorrow at 7. That will give us enough time to sneak into the trunk of David's car before the drive off."

"Sounds perfect", Neil confirmed.
