Chapter 3: Hourglass Heart

Luz couldn't grasp a second to breathe, the sheer panic on her face matched that of someone who had just witnessed a murder. Tears dripped down her face while the wind of the boiling isles dried them, with more coming each and every second. She arrived at the hospital, running as fast as she could to reach Anity's room, running under hospital staff and patients that were taller than her, jumping over hospital beds, finally, she reached the corridor. Edric and Emira stood outside the room, Emira had her face buried in her hand, to hide that she had been crying, while Edric comforted her. " What happened ?!! Is Amity okay??" , Luz asked frantically, her hands were shaking and her voice was cracking. Neither Ed or Em answered. Luz gasped and looked at the floor, she then ran to the door to see for herself what had happened. Ed grabbed the door as soon as Luz approached and kept his hand firm on it. " Mittens went into cardiac arrest, her heart stopped for a few minutes, and they managed to get her back but", Edric looked away, a tear coming from his eye, " She's in a coma, and we don't know how long or when she'll wake up" Emira said looking up with her eyes puffy and defeated. Luz stood there, and slowly she fell to the ground, she put her hand on her mouth to stop herself from screaming, but the damage was done. " no........NO!!!! WE WERE JUST TOGETHER!! SHE WAS FINE, EVERYTHING WAS FINE!!", Luz started hyperventilating , while she pounded the ground, tears had never come down more than they did in that moment. Emira and Edric walked towards her to comfort her, as soon as they did, Luz looked up and could see through the small crack of the door, Amity layed in her bed, her skin looked as pale as could be, and her face had the expression of fear. Her oxygen mask and heart monitor were the only things Luz could hear, everything else rung in her ears. Her chest was tight and her skin was full of goosebumps from head to toe, she got up and walked into the room, Edric and Emira following to try to stop her, but before they could, she used a plant glyph to block them. She walked in the room to look at her girlfriend. "Amity....I'm- im so sorry I didn't stay longer, I never should have went home, I should've never left you alone, especially in all this. I know what sickness does to you, I KNOW what can happen, but please, whatever it does, please keep trying, i know you can't hear me, but I love you so much, you're an amazing girlfriend, and I don't want this to end". Luz lightly layed her head on Amity's motionless body, " and if worse comes to worse, if you lose this dumb battle, atleast I'll be with you til the end". Luz closed her eyes with tears still pouring down, she fell asleep there, with Doctor's coming in from time to time to check Amity's vitals. Luz no longer feared the cold reality of a hospital, it was an atmosphere she knew far too well. Not from visits to see Amity, but from her own experience, months before Amity was diagnosed, Luz had gotten word from the doctors that she had cancer. Though unknown to the boiling isles, they still talked out treatment plans, boiling isles medicine allowed for Luz to keep her youthful look and hair, with Eda helping her with elixirs, but even with her appearance staying the same, her life span was depleted. Luz only had 1 month left to live. She was aware of this, and never told anyone besides King, Willow and Gus. She didn't want Amity to worry. But soon she would have to expose the truth, because there is only so much time in an hourglass heart.
