🕊Chapter Forty-Two: The Surgery 🕊

🕊🕊🕊

I nervously bit the nail of my thumb as I paced around the room. I was in a small waiting room of sorts while Alaina was getting her surgery done. It's been over an hour now and they weren't even close to being done. At least, that's what the Excorcist watching me told me.

Yukio was in the operating room with everyone else, while I was stuck out here. My flames were active, flowing around me as I anxiously waited. I don't know how long I paced around that room, but it felt like hours. I wouldn't be surprised if it was. We've been here since four in the morning.

My chest began to ache, and my heart skipped a beat nervously. My head spun and my legs felt like they were moving on their own.

"Hey! You can't leave."

I turned my head around, my eyes widening slightly when I saw the Exorcist behind me, her hand placed on my shoulder. Did I move to the door...? When?

A faint scream sounded in the distance, causing the lights in the waiting room to flicker. I looked at the lights as they flashed with wide eyes, the woman doing the same through her sunglasses. Who wore sunglasses indoors anyway?

I felt my heart jump into my throat as a thought popped into my head. My brows furrowed and I looked back to the Exorcist who was still occupied with the lights.

"I'm sorry," I said, shoving my arms forward, knocking her to the ground. I spun around, swinging the door open as I stepped through. I slammed the door in the woman's face just as she reached me. She was shouting, but the blood rushing to my ears prevented me from hearing any sound. She tried to open the door, but my hand kept it closed.

"I'm sorry," I repeated, breaking the handle off the door, rendering it useless. I dropped the handle and ran down the hall. I knew where to go. They were doing it in the same room we were in before.

I ran around the corner, narrowly losing my balance as I caught myself before I fell. My hip knocked into a corner table, knocking down an expensive-looking vase. I reached the room, and slammed open the door, shouting, "What's happening?! I heard her scream!"

"Rin!? You can't be here!" Yukio shouted, running in front of me to keep me from going any closer.

"I don't give a damn! I heard her scream, so tell me what happened or get outta my way!"

"RIN!"

My eyes widened, hearing her calling my name. I pushed Yukio to the side, running towards the door that lead to the operating room. "ALAINA!"

"Get back! Don't get any closer!" Akuma's voice rang over everyone else's, "Stop him!"

I gritted my teeth together, looking around at everyone, "Don't touch me!" I shouted, clenching my fists tightly at my sides. I heard her scream again, and I spun around, seeing her being held down by doctors; four in total; one on each limb. Her back was arched, and her eyes leaked tears, creating small puddles on the metal table. Her screams of bloody murder made me feel sick.

"ALAINA-" I was cut off when I suddenly gasped, feeling something sharp and pointy stick itself into the back of my neck. I blinked slowly, feeling drowsy. I took a lazy step forward, my vision beginning to cloud in and out. I blinked again and found myself on the floor.

Hazy...

Is that me?...

I stared at myself.

My ears were pointed, my teeth were elongated, and I had that look in my eyes. Like a demon... but different. I blinked again, struggling to stay awake. It was quiet... The doctors no longer held down Alaina... She didn't move.

I reached my hand out to her, trying to call out her name... only for my hand to fall onto the ground and my vision to go black.

I gasped, sitting up in a hurry. I looked around, seeing myself in the dorm rooms. My eyes widened, "Alaina?!" I swung the covers off of my body, ignoring the fact that I was still in my school uniform, and began running out of my room and through the halls of the dormitory. "Alaina!"

I sprinted down the steps, nearly tripping the entire way down. I slammed against the wall of the staircase before jumping down the length of the last set of stairs to the ground floor.

I saw the main door open and I ran over, seeing Yukio enter. I wasted no time in running in front of him, grabbing him by his shoulders,

"Rin-?!" Yukio exclaimed, his eyes wide in surprise.

"WHERE IS SHE?!" I shouted.

Yukio's eyes remained wide for a moment before they softened and a gentle look replaced his open mouth. "She's all right, Rin. Just resting."

I felt my grip on Yukio's shoulders tighten a little, "Where?" My voice was desperate and soft sounding.

Yukio's eyes softened in a way I didn't like. They looked sad. "You can't see her."

"What-?! Why not?!!!" Yukio didn't answer me, simply staring at me through his glasses; a look of sympathy on his face but no answer. I gritted my teeth and shook his shoulders, "Answer me, Yukio!"

He sighed, pushing my arms off him and pushing up his glasses, "She's in a coma."

My eyes widened and a small gasp left my throat. "Wha... A coma?..."

"If you go see her, being in the presence of the Koma sword might alter the completion of the transportation and her powers might revert back to the Koma sword. That could kill her. You can't risk it. The transportation was a lot for her body to handle because of her age and her power's maturity. It caused her immense pain and high-stress levels. Especially after you barged in. Once the transportation was completed, she lost consciousness and hasn't woken up since." He explained and walked more into the building as I watched him, "The sword can not get within range of her or the sword. And because you can't leave the side of the Koma sword, you'd be unable to see her."

"Wha-... But-... What about earlier?! I was away from the sword then!"

"That was because you were supervised and it was for a cause. Not like it mattered since you escaped anyway." He said before sighing. "I'm sorry, Rin. I truly am. But right now, you cannot see her."

He walked over to me, placing a hand on my shoulder as he patted it softly, saying, "It's for the best.", before walking away and disappearing up the stairs, leaving me in the same place, looking at the ground with empty eyes.

Rain poured down outside as the winds blew ravenously. Thick gray clouds hung over everywhere like a broken bulb preventing the light from shining through. It was later in the day, and a heavy storm had rolled in. How fitting... I was sitting at my desk in my room, the lights off aside from the single lamp on my desk, illuminating the room with a soft, warm, yellow glow.

I held my pencil in my hand, my cheek squished against my fist as I tapped the eraser of my pencil on the desk, fiddling with something to try and occupy my mind. It was around ten in the evening, and Yukio had already gone to sleep. I looked up from the desk and peered out of the window covered in droplets of rain that raced one another to see who could reach the bottom first.

A loud clap of thunder and a strike of lightning caused the small lamp on the desk to flicker, catching my attention to the gloomy appearance of myself in the window's reflection. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I dropped my pencil and stood up from the chair. I clicked the lamp off, the room drowning in darkness. My bare feet slapped quietly against the wooden floor, and my tail hung freely, nearly dragging against the floor as I walked to my bed, slithering between the covers.

What a shitty day.
