Prologue

The bowl of liquid glowed in the moonlight as Malo dipped her right hand into the warm essence; she smiled as she thought of her own parents doing this and reminded herself to make this night memorable because this would be an important story to tell her children in the future.

A tiny jolt of light inside the bowl jerked her back to the present; Malo’s hand was now gleaming with the same luminous light as the essence. Drawing her hand out of the bowl she walked out into the stone rings of the hatching grounds, the large circle in the centre of the stone ring was filled with hot sands, perfect for keeping eggs on.

As Malo reached the edge of the sand Zwasgn, her partner, stepped out onto the sand on the other side of the ring, his right hand too was gleaming like Malo’s. Grinning like small children they walked to the middle of the circle and joined hands. Placing their glowing palms down into the sand, Zwasgn’s on top of Malo’s, and together they left the ring their hands now back to normal and excitedly talking as they rushed up to the dining hall.

Tonight was the life ceremony and they were a part of it for the first time.
