Kilu looked towards the last table where Wl's mum, Tavia, had pointed them. Even with the dining hall slowly clearing it was still hard for her to see how many heads were near the table.
"Can you see them Wl? You are taller than me." She ducked under the outstretched arm of one of the kitchen staff.
"No, I can't sorry." He replied.
"Hold on a second," Kilu stepped up onto a vacant spot on the bench beside her. She tried to look out across the dining hall but the extra height was only enough for her to reach just below shoulder height, of most of the crowd. "I'm still too short to see." She whined.
"I can lift you up a bit." Wl said. He climbed onto the bench beside her. "Here, hop on my back." Kilu took another step up onto the table, earning her a few disapproving looks from the adults nearby.
Wl had turned his back to her and was crouched a little, holding his hands out above his shoulders.
She took his hands to steady herself, climbing onto his back.
He carefully straightened, Kilu's head now rising level with the other adults in the hall. Scanning over the crowd, she looked down the tables, searching for the rest of her friends.
They would be short so somewhere the crowd dipped, she followed along the table turning her head slowly. She noticed a dip in height, maybe another ten meters away, she guessed. "There they are!" She pointed to two heads on the far side of the dip.
"Are you sure?" Wl asked, beginning to shake from holding her up for too long.
"Yep, definitely." She replied. It was hard to mistake them for someone else, the unmistakable orange curls and coal black of their hair was quite a giveaway. However, they had noticed, and were frantically flapping their arms at her.
Wl began to lower her again, wobbling. She slid from his back, landing safely on the table.
"Thanks Wl." She smiled and hopped onto the bench beside him.
"So where are they and how far?" He asked, running his hands through the brown waves of his hair.
"Maybe ten meters or so, on the right side, of the next table." She answered.
"Cool, not too far then. I'm starving." Wl said hopping onto the floor.
"Well then, let's go!" She jumped from the bench. The two began to push their way through legs and feet, making slow progress towards their destination.
"Kilu! Wl!" An orange curly haired boy called them over, waving.
"Hi Diw!" Kilu called back. She stepped out from the crowd and seated herself across the table from the boy. Wl joined her sitting in the next seat.
"Me and Wyntr saved you seats and luckily dinner." Diw said. He pushed two plates across the table towards them.
"Thanks." Kilu and Wl both said, taking a plate each.
"You're welcome!" Diw grinned. He nudged the tall dark haired boy to his left. "Wyntr?"
"Yea, no problem." The boy said. He shrugged and lazily brushed off Diw's prodding.
"So, are you guys excited for school tomorrow?" Diw happily chatted away. "I'm excited to see what we learn but I hope it isn't too much like our other school."
All of the kids at Swlgn attended classes once they turned five. They would learn basic reading, writing, math and history. Once they reached the age of eight these classes stopped and they began at a new school. This school didn't teach math and writing though. It taught the children about their animals, how to control them, and other special skills, such as fighting, tracking, healing.
"I guess I'm a little excited?" Kilu replied, tearing off a chunk of bread from the slice on her plate.
"Yea me too," Wl said. "I hope we get to learn some cool stuff."
"I'd like to learn to fight!" Wyntr enthusiastically began to fake punches at an imaginary opponent across the table.
Diw used this confusion of fists to reach across and quickly sneak a piece of meat off Kilu's plate. "Hey Diw!" Kilu whined. Wyntr stopped his fistfight and looked across at her.
"What happened?" he asked.
"Diw stole off my plate." Kilu replied.
"I was hungry." Diw complained.
"Really Diw, but you just ate?" Wl questioned.
"I know. But I'm always hungry."
"You should have just asked." Wl said. He took a few slices of meat of his own plate, giving some to Kilu and the rest to Diw. "There." He smiled.
"Thanks." Both Kilu and Diw replied, returning to eating happily.
