Chapter 2

“Diw wake up! Class will begin soon and you don’t want to be late for our first lesson. Come on!” Kilu was furiously shaking the small red fox trying to get him to wake.

“It’s useless, just leave him here, it’s not our fault if he misses class.” groaned Wyntr, as he rolled his dark grey eyes and flung himself over the back of a wooden chair in frustration.

“But that’s mean Wyntr.” Wl corrected, his hands on his hips staring at Wyntr, now squirming round on the chair, annoyed that he was being told off by someone smaller than him.

“Well if he’s not waking how do we get him to class?” questioned Wyntr, as he got up and walked toward the sleeping fox.

Wyntr's short dark hair and narrow murky eyes gave him a very menacing look as he towered over the others. Wyntr was tall for his age and he enjoyed it, being taller and stronger than all his friends meant he was needed rather often to reach the great heavy bolts of the doors around the castle, although opening them was an entirely different matter and involved at least two people.

“Wyntr you’re the strongest of us maybe you could carry him.” Kilu suggested.

“Do I have to?” Wyntr whined, flopping back down onto the chair.

This was one of the reasons he didn’t like being the strongest but his friends would get nowhere without him. Helping them out was a noble thing to do but sometimes that was hard to be noble for Wyntr. Especially when it involved carrying someone up and down stairs.

“Yes, of course you do. We can’t let him miss class and no one else has any ideas.” concluded Wl.

Wyntr didn’t bother replying he knew there would be no choice in the matter.

So Kilu and Wl both picked up the sleeping fox and Wyntr changing into his arctic wolf crouched down as they lay Diw over his back.

Slowly they began walking toward class, their first lesson ever was to be held on the third floor of the castles left wing and with so many stairs and passages it made for quite a hike to get there.

By the time they reached the large wooden door at the end of the passage they were hot and exhausted, hardly ready to start class which would begin any second.

“Thanks for the lift Wyntr!” a cheerful, wide-awake and not at all tired Diw slid of Wyntr’s back and changed back to his human self grinning at his friends stunned and irritated faces.

“You were awake the whole time!” a fuming Wyntr gasped as he grew out of his wolf form to stand a head taller than Diw. His eyes narrowing as he glares down at the Diw.

Diw looks away and takes a few steps backwards to move away from the terrifying shadow of an angry Wyntr, he could feel the deathly gaze slicing into him and felt as if there was nothing in the world that would calm down Wyntr after what he had done.

“I’m really sorry Wyntr; I just didn’t want to climb the stairs. I’m so sorry. Please Wyntr I’m sorry.” Pleaded Diw, his voice shaking as he was backed into the corner of the passage his back pressing against the wall as the arctic wolf drew nearer and nearer.

Wyntr was shaking with anger; he had carried Diw all the way to class thinking he was helping him because he was asleep when all along he was wide awake.

Wyntr’s lips curled back in a snarl as a deep rumble of thunder escaped his throat. He barred his teeth and advanced further on Diw cowering in the corner.

Kilu and Wl step back further out into the passage terrified of Wyntr. He snaps at an already trembling Diw making him shriek and tossing his head turns to snarl at Kilu trying to get to Diw.

Wyntr barred his fangs again and crouched down low getting ready to leap at Diw.

“Wyntr! Stop it! Diw apologised, just leave him alone!” Kilu screamed her voice shaking as she stepped between a livid Wyntr poised to attack and a trembling Diw now collapsed on the floor.

“Diw knows now that what he did was wrong and he won’t do it again. Please can you just go back to your normal self and help us Wyntr. Please?” Kilu pleaded, her heart beating faster as time seemed to freeze and her eyes locked with Wyntr’s.

Finally he backed down, changed back to his human form and sat, his back to Diw staring out down the corridor a look of rage on his face as he breathed deeply trying to calm himself down.

Kilu unfroze and breathed a sigh of relief before turning to look behind her; Wl was fruitlessly trying to lift a collapsed and petrified Diw off the floor.

“Now that everyone has calmed down can someone help us open the door please?” Kilu asked quietly and looked hopefully towards Wyntr, only to be disappointed as he turned even further away from them and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Great.” Kilu huffed “Diw’s nearly scared to death and Wyntr won’t help us with the door. How are we ever going to get into class Wl? We both know Wyntr’s the only one who can reach the bolt on the door.”

Kilu sunk to the floor her head in her hands and wished she were taller.
