Chapter 1

Kilu looked out onto the castle courtyards, her head resting in her hands as she lay against the windowsill.

Zlair had been Kilu’s home for eight years, her entire life. And from where she was now in Swlgn castle she could see most of the kingdom, all the way out to Grntlor forest. Kilu had always dreamed of what was behind Grntlor forest but she was not yet ready to leave Zlair.

“Kilu!” a sudden joyous cry split through the air. Kilu taken quite by surprise had vanished and in her place, a tiny mouse was hiding behind the curtain edge. The mouse looking quite alarmed jumped and as it was falling transformed into a very relieved looking Kilu.

Her friend Wl who had just come into the room started laughing and as he did he rolled onto the floor and while still laughing kept changing back and forth between Wl, the human and Wl, the Shiba inu, a small hunting dog.

Kilu frowned at Wl and watched as he laughed and rolled about even more as Kilu got increasingly angry at him.

Kilu swiftly burst out at Wl in the form of a wolf. Wl immediately stopped laughing and changing back to his normal self, he sat down and looked up shyly at Kilu.

“Sorry. I just haven’t seen you in so long and then when you got that fright and changed into a mouse, it was really funny. Sorry.” Wl apologised, Kilu smiled slightly as she sat down next to Wl.

“By the way Kilu, you need to see someone about your animals, I mean it’s not normal being able to turn into whatever you want. People only get one animal, so why do you have heaps?” Wl looked at Kilu with a slight tilt to his head, as he often did when he was not sure of something.

“I know I will have to tell someone, but what will they do? I don’t want them to get cross at me for not telling when we first found out I could be more than one animal. Even Mum and Dad don’t know I can be more than one.” Kilu looked down at her feet,

“What would Mum and Dad say if I told them I wasn’t just an arctic fox?” Kilu paused before looking back up at Wl.

“Can you keep this a secret? Just until I decide when we should tell someone? Please don’t tell anyone Wl.”

“I won’t tell Kilu, but it won’t do to not tell anyone, and then change into hundreds of different animals whenever you can’t control yourself.” Wl laughed,

“That would be just stupid saying you were an arctic fox and then turning into a lion, mouse, bird and fish in front of everyone.”

“Stop laughing Wl, this is serious.” Kilu nudged Wl’s arm, then continued

“But I guess you do have a point I should learn to control it.” They both sat silent for a minute before Wl jumped up.

“Come on Kilu, we should go, I actually came to tell you it was time for dinner and that was ages ago, come on! Hurry! All the good food will be gone!”

And then in an instant Wl changed into a Shiba inu and was off racing down the hallway with Kilu, the arctic fox chasing happily at his heels trying to reach the dining hall before they missed dinner entirely.
