Notes ~ This one shot is inspired by the Bruno Mars song Talking to the moon. Every night after Hopper's 'death' Joyce sits on the porch talking to Hopper. The Byers never moved in this one shot and it will be a mix of different days when Joyce talks to him.

Day One ~ Friday July 5th 1985:

At 9pm Joyce Byers car rolled into her driveway slowly, she got out of the car in a slim fit black dress which fell just above the knee. Joyce wasn't one to just dress up, today was an occasion, she was supposed to be meeting Hopper for their date but things didn't go the way they planned. When did things ever go to plan in Hawkins?

Joyce decided she would go to Enzo's alone in hope Hopper would walk through the door and reassure her it was all okay but he never did and she knew he never would again. She planned to eat a proper meal at Enzo's but she just ended up getting drunk and eating breadsticks, coincidentally the same thing Hopper did when he was there but she would never hear the story of what happened that night.

She finally began walking towards the door of her house, mascara and eyeliner smudged around her eyes, she'd clearly been crying. She didn't cry around the kids much, she wouldn't put her weight on them, after all they'd been through a lot too. Especially El. The girl who lost everything she knew in one night.

Joyce decided the best option was for El to live with them, after all no other adult knew about her. The Byers house was also the safest option, no other houses around and surrounded by woods, it was pretty isolated and she could still easily see her friends. Joyce knocked on the door, she'd forgot her keys, again.

A few moments later Jonathan opened the door to her, Jonathan tried saying something to her but she didn't hear anything, she was already halfway down the hallway to her bedroom. He'd probably seen the mascara smudged around her eyes of her stumbling through the door due to one too many glasses of red wine and the lack of food she ate.

She opened the door to her bedroom and locked it behind her so none of the kids would walk in. She took off the black dress and hung it in her wardrobe where it would probably never be moved from again and got changed in to some pyjamas. She put her wavy hair up into a bun, grabbed her pack of cigarettes and walked onto the front porch, ignoring Jonathan and Will telling her how cold it was.

She sat on the porch swing and lit a cigarette, they weren't her usual choice for smokes, they were his. She took the first drag and coughed slightly due to how strong it was but eventually got used to it. "I miss you Hop" she whispered into the thin air hoping somehow he would hear her or hoping somehow he would come back to her.

She sighed before talking again, "it's been hard Hop I could have really done with you being here" she laughed slightly, "this is a bit ridiculous isn't it me talking to you even though I know you can't answer." She crushed the cigarette bud on the arm on the swing. "El's here with us, she's gonna stay here now, she's safe Hop we all are thanks to you" she said a fresh tear slipping down her face.

She wiped the tear carefully from her face, "what am I supposed to do without you Hop?" she asked the universe. She sat outside for another thirty minutes smoking more cigarettes before she caught herself shivering, "goodnight Hop.." she paused for a moment, "I love you." She walked back inside to see El sat alone on the couch watching a TV show.

Joyce looked over at the clock which read '10:01pm' then it clicked. She was watching Miami Vice, the show her and Hop watched together. He'd mentioned it to Joyce the night before when they made plans to go to Enzo's. Joyce sat beside the teen on the couch and gave her a weak smile which El returned.

"I miss him" El said cuddling closer to Joyce and putting the blanket over them both. "I miss him too El more than you know" Joyce said trying to hold back tears from falling. "is that because you loved him?" El asked innocently. Joyce was shocked and confused, how did a teenage girl who had been locked up in a lab for years know she was in love and she couldn't even admit it to herself?
