I sat upon the chair behind the desk at the shop. God summer was awful. The sun-baked me through the windows as people in all kinds of suits walked by.
Blue suits and yellow summer dresses. Hats that were too large for the women's heads and ties so tight that they couldn't even fit around your wrists. Men in ripped shorts and women in rags. This town was very vast with the kind of people here. Rich and poor, poor and rich. It didn't matter to me at all, all I needed was someone to buy my books.
None of the women here knew how to read, and the few that did couldn't bring themselves to buy anything. The men were educated and yet they refused to enter my bookshop because they had 'balls' and 'gallas' to attend to. It pissed me off. It pissed me off so much that if I had a bucket of water, I'd gladly dump it on their heads!
Most of my books get brought or rented in the winter when it was cold and the men could snuggle up with their wives and children and read them stories. Bleh! I always found that romantic stuff boring. I was more into adventure and gore! Not a lot of my books were about that though and those which were I had already read over fifteen times.
I decided to close up for today and went next door to buy some flowers to replace my wilting roses.
'hey Niki' I greeted her
'hello y/n! I believe you've come to replace your flowers again? You should really look after them you know.'
'I've tried to but nothing works. All I can do now is replace them especially in this heat.'
'it is hot today isn't it?' she hushed down 'I heard someone from further up the kingdom say it was 33°C!'
'seriously! That hasn't happened since 1945'
'i know right?'
'How'd you find out?'
'I went to go see my father and one of the knights said so! He wore this giant red Cape and he was really large and tall, he seemed so tense'
'Seems someone likes him'
'oh no no no, I admire him more, like a role model. He seems like a man who's strong on the battlefield, I've always wanted to be able to get on the battlefield.'
Its been Niki's dream ever since we were 14 to become a Knight and stand with the men on the battlefield. However, women weren't allowed to fight, and even though it's illegal Niki has been training in secret to get her body more used to fighting. She hopes that one day, maybe the rules might change.
As I take my roses and give her the shillings, we say our goodbyes and I go back to my shop.
