The massive high school towers over all the other buildings in this bustling suburban area. It's like the school stands at the centre of the entire world. Hope's Peak Academy is a high school that brings in the top students from every field imaginable, a government-funded school of privilege.
They say that if you come here and manage to graduate, then you'll be set for life. With hundreds of years of tradition, this school sends the cream of the crop into the work force every year. That's why every child dreams to come to this school, to become like the role models they idolize.
Founded by Izuru Kamukura in 1940, at the height of the Second World War, Hope's Peak Academy was built in order to raise hope in the nation's future. This is why the name 'Hope's Peak' has not undergone any name changes since its creation, and it's why the talents of students are developed with traditionalist values.
There are two requirements needed for a person to be selected for enrollment by those called 'talent scouts,' with the current one being Koichi Kizakura. The first thing you need is to be in a high school already, which makes the minimum age to attend around sixteen or seventeen, depending on when you are scouted. The second thing you need is to be the very best in the field you're in. The only way to enroll in the main course is to be selected by a talent scout, the only other way you can get in is if your name is drawn in an annual nationwide lottery, and the one who is drawn is dubbed the 'Ultimate Lucky Student.'
There is a way for ordinary students to attend the academy and have the brand name on their resume nonetheless, and that is by enrolling into the Hope's Peak Academy's Reserve Course. Created in 2016, this department was a way for regular students to join the academy's ranks and maybe even be selected to join the main course. The drawbacks to this are the astronomical fees the students have to pay, but the reason why is rumoured to be because the academy was falling into debt for an unknown reason.
"Yo, Nik! Are you free right now?"
Nikei sighed as he rolled his eyes, looking up from the report-style article he was writing. "What is it, Setsuka? You know damn well what that 'do not disturb' sign is for!"
"Aw, come on! I got coupons for that café down the road!" Setsuka called back. After hearing his stomach rumble, Nikei sighed and closed his laptop. He had finished his energy drink an hour ago, and it was probably for his benefit to get himself a bit of food or drink, especially since he didn't have to pay for it.
Nikei stepped outside of his room and grabbed his coat, hat, and shoes. "I hope this is quick, I have to get back to my article soon," he grumbled.
Setsuka opened the door and grabbed him by the hand. "Come on, Nik. I know your job is important, but are you really living if you don't do fun things?" she asked, dragging him out of the dorm. She closed it behind them and watched as it mechanically locked automatically. Only a swipe of the owners' handbooks would open it again.
The billiards player led the journalist out of the residence building and towards the gates of Hope's Peak Academy, though Nikei had been to the café enough times for their coffee to have memorized the route by now. As they walked on their way there, Nikei started looking at his notepad and recapping the things he already knew and the things he needed to do, unintentionally walking ahead of Setsuka.
Nikei Yomiuri was enrolled into Class 77-A in 2017, and he had met an array of people weirder than a goddamn circus. He was roommates with Setsuka in a decently-sized dorm, so he had to deal with the carefree, sisterly billiards player daily. But he's interviewed almost everyone else in his class at least one now, and each of them has a unique story to tell.
