Setsuka felt happy as she came back home by bus today, she found out that after a few years of going to college to be a private detective, her graduation was coming up soon. She couldn't wait to share the news with her boyfriends.
She could only imagine how they would react when they heard the news: Nikei would probably hug her and make an attempt to spin her around, but would fail from not being strong enough. Mikado would kiss her all over and then speed away to make a feast using everything in the fridge.
That was what she had planned for, and that image was in her mind as she happily stepped into the house with her bags. To her shock, what she heard wasn't the normal greetings she got after returning home, but the sound of a loud argument. Setsuka hated fighting, especially involving the people she loved, and she closed the door and took off her shoes to quickly break up the argument.
Nikei was on the couch while Mikado was at the stairs, and the wizard looked nervous compared to the enraged journalist. "Greater good?! Why the fuck would you think that it would be the greater good, Sannoji?!" Nikei demanded.
"I-I just didn't want her to accidentally upset you by saying something wrong!" Mikado tried to justify. "I didn't want you to have reactions like Emma does!"
"Reactions?! I'm a journalist, for fuck's sake!" he shouted back. "I have thicker skin because I've seen a lot of shit from my job! I can handle hearing about my own past!"
Setsuka chose that time to step in. "What's going on here?" she questioned, her tone both stern and worried. That caught their attention, and Nikei turned away from both of them with a huff while Mikado slinked up the stairs.
Looking between them, Setsuka decided that calming down Nikei and figuring out what had him so upset in the first place. If Mikado had been that nervous, it usually meant that the wizard knew that he was in the wrong. With that in mind, Setsuka walked over to Nikei and sat down beside him on the couch.
"...Didn't think you'd get home so soon," Nikei grumbled out, making an attempt to greet her despite his grouchiness. "Sorry you had to see that."
"What's going on, Nik?" she asked, gently rubbing his shoulder. "You usually aren't as angry as that anymore."
"Yeah, sorry. I found out about Mikado telling you my whole past without consulting me at all, and I guess I flew off the handle. I keep that stuff secret for a reason, you know?" the journalist sighed, beginning to lean against her. "Whatever, the biggest problem is that you know now."
"I get where you're coming from. Mikado did end up telling me without consulting you, I was worried about that when he started his explanation. And I'm sorry too, for letting him tell me," Setsuka admitted, feeling her boyfriend's body relax against her. "After Kado told me everything, I remembered your graduation ceremony and put everything together. But I don't think any less of you."
Nikei's body stiffened, as if her words were a shock to his system. "You...don't? But after everything done to me, even my body is..." he murmured, trailing off.
"I'll never think any less of you, Nik. Nothing was your fault, and I can see how everything made you the way you are," Setsuka paused to kiss Nikei on the forehead, "but I still love all of you. And Kado does too, that much is plain to see."
Nikei was silent, but continued leaning on her with a blank expression on his face. She had no idea what was running through his head, but she had a feeling that too many thoughts had taken root in his mind.
She moved to kiss him on the cheek, then stood up from the couch. "I'm gonna go talk to Kado now. When I bring him down, please hear him out," she requested, then headed towards the stairs. She never got an answer from Nikei as she headed up to their bedroom.
