CRUNCH
Twigs snapped under me as I landed on the ground, wet leaves soaking through the thin soles of my shoes, soaking my socks. I didn't stop to think about it, though. I had to get away, and fast.
Without a second thought, I scrambled to my feet and started running.
My own heavy breaths filled my ears. I wouldn't be able to use my wings for a while unless I wanted to hurt my completely exposed back even more.
As far as I could tell with the dim lighting of the street lamps, there was no one else walking under the late evening sky, meaning I was completely alone. Perfect.
It wasn't long before I heard the faint roar of an engine, one I knew very well, in fact, so, without stopping, let alone thinking, I turned right the moment I got a chance.
I kept running, my legs moving without a single command, my tightly shut eyes brimming with tears. I opened my eyes to make sure I could see where I was going, only to be met by a crowded city street filled with shining signs and neon lights. I slowly came to a stop, earning stares and whispers from strangers around me.
"Shit..." I thought, still breathing heavily.
The loud engine of Ryusei's motorcycle came into earshot again just as I started walking normally. I looked behind me briefly before taking off again, blurred faces rushing past me. The chatter of strangers, the bright lights, the judging expressions, they all filled my sense, but not enough to make me ignore them.
The pink skin, the bright red hair, the spiky blonde hair, their faces frozen in shock as time seemed to slow just enough for me to get a glimpse of them. I slowed down a little, looking behind me at my friends, frozen in surprise.
Right as I turned my attention back to the path in front of me, I bumped into a wall of black fabric.
"Excuse yo-" the person started.
"Sor-" I began, just as I looked up to see none other than my teacher.
His expression was a mix of confusion, anger, and shock.
"Hatsuko?" He sneered.
"I... Uhm..." I stuttered, getting to my feet and brushing myself off. "I can explain-"
"You better." He demanded, his cold glare drilling a hole in my head.
"I-" I started speaking before Present Mic and Midnight walked towards Aizawa.
They were barely recognizable without their hero costumes, but I could clearly tell who they were.
"Sho-" Present Mic stopped and stared at me for a moment. "Who... is this?" He narrowed his eyes slightly.
"Hey! You're the dragon girl from when we chose hero names! Rathian, was it?" Midnight looked me up and down, one hand on her chin.
"It's Wyvern, and I-" I began again before the roar of an engine came closer and closer. "Shit." I said looking behind me and then back at the pro heroes.
Aizawa raised an eyebrow before looking behind me at a pair of bright yellow headlights. His eyes widened slightly and he pushed me behind him just as the motorcycle pulled up right next to us on the road.
I stepped to the side slightly, just enough to be able to see him.
Rysuei turned the keys and the bike turned off, the headlights going with it. He got off the bike and unclipped his helmet and goggles.
"Hinaki!" He opened his arms for a hug and moved towards me before Aizawa stepped in front of me once again.
I stumbled over my feet and fell backwards, Midnight catching me.
"I'm going to have to ask you to step back until you identify yourself." Aizawa said.
I heard Ryusei sigh.
I moved over to see what was going on.
Ryusei dug through his pocket for a second before taking out his wallet and flipping it open.
"Ryusei Uzaiyaro, Hinaki's guardian." He said.
"Uhuh..." Aizawa furrowed his eyebrows.
"Look, I just need to get her home. It's a school day tomorrow, and it's late, and-" Ryusei started before Aizawa put a hand up.
"I understand, but I'm going to need to see a legalized form of guardianship over her." Aizawa's voice went dead cold.
I saw a flash of fear in Ryusei's eyes.
"Why would I have that on demand?" He responded.
"Because you, an unidentified adult, are trying to "take home" an underage girl." Aizawa said.
"Are you kidding me?" Ryusei was obviously frustrated at this point.
"Nope." Aizawa said, his expression still completely serious. "I have very good reason to believe there's something else going on, considering she's running through the streets late at night while you chase her around on a motorcycle. That doesn't sound very good on your part."
"Look, she hasn't taken her meds and I'm just trying to make sure she doesn't hurt herself or worse." Ryusei was now scowling, breathing heavily, shoulders puffed up, hands stuffed in his pockets. I was praying the heroes knew how to read body language.
Aizawa chuckled quietly.
"You see, the thing about that is that as her teacher, I would know of any medication she'd have to take." Aizawa said, tilting his head to the side ever so slightly.
Ryusei's eyes widened and his mouth opened a little.
"What exactly are you saying then?" Ryusei asked.
"I'm saying you're lying."
Within seconds, Aizawa stepped forward and Ryusei hopped on his bike and drove off in one move, leaving the breeze to push the small smoke cloud from his bike in our direction.
We all just stood there, completely motionless, as if time had stopped dead in it's tracks.
The background noise of the busy street drowned out, my own breathing being the only thing I could focus on as my vision blurred with tears. Every part of my body felt numb, my legs feeling like they would give out any second.
But I just stood there.
Surrounded by whispers, flashing lights, and people.
I was squished in between the three heroes who were being pushed by strangers, but the one fact remained.
I was free.
Finally free.
