The Best Mistake

Chapter 16

I opened my eyes. My body refuses to get up but I need to.

I took a shower and concealed my eyes. I head to the kitchen. They look suprised, more like confused.

"Why didn't you have dinner last night?"

"I wasn't hungry."

"Tell me what's wrong."

"Mickey, let her be..."

"YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S WRONG??? MY "BESTFRIEND" IS PREGNANT WITH "SUPPOSED TO BE" BOYFRIEND'S CHILD!"

They fell silent.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know."

"Of course you don't. No suprise there."

"Watch that tone of yours."

"Silence is key, right mom?"

"You--"

I dashed out the door and went to the boardwalk and sat at the bench in front of Tommy's. It was packed today as it is every day. I took out my camera and took some pictures of the board walk.

"Hi."

It was a little boy He has red hair and freckles. He was holding a cone of ice cream.

"Hi. What's your name?"

"My name is Jason."

"Hi, Jason. My name is Sylvia."

"Hi. Is that your camera?"

"Yes, it is. I bought it."

"It looks like my dad's."

"I'm sure I didn't take it from your dad."

"I know. He used to take pictures for the newspaper. Some people were angry at him so..." He looked down and became sad.

"Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that."

"I put that smiley face there."

I looked at my camera and saw the smiley face.

"Jason, do you want me to take a picture of you?"

"Why?"

"Maybe your dad likes to look at his camera sometimes. Do you want him to see you?"

"Will you?"

He smiled with ice cream on his face. I press the button, the shutter made a soft sound indicating the fact the moment will forever remain.

"Jason?"

It was a lady in her late 20s. She had the same shade of red like Jason's. I remember her 2 years ago.

"Look mom, she has dad's camera."

"What ar--"

She looked at me and remembered me. I gave her a smile and she returned it.

"Hello."

"Hi. I'm sorry but we need to go."

"Oh yes. It's nice to meet you Jason."

"Bye."

They walked away. He made me realized the fact that I miss my own father.
