(Dan's POV)
I wake up, and turn to my side to see that Phil isn't there. I groggily walk out of his bedroom and down the stairs to see him in the kitchen, fumbling with pots and pans.
"Phil?"
He turns around, dropping a whisk and knocking over a bowl. He smiles a bit, awkwardly picking them up. "I was trying to make you some hotcakes..."
"You don't have to make me anything, Phil. Let's put everything away, yeah? We can go out today, instead."
His face lights up at my idea, and he happily nods, starting to put away all the supplies. "That's perfect, actually," He starts, shoving some bowls into a cupboard. "I want to tell you something. It would be great to do that."
"Okay." I help him wash some dishes, and then we go to the store to buy picnic supplies. Hours later, we are in an open field, setting down a brand-new blanket we bought.
As he sets out the food onto the red and white blanket, I stare at the scenery, lost in my thoughts. The bright sun shines onto the lush, dark green grass. The grass is long, and it looks so nice and soft, like I could actually fall asleep on it. There aren't any trees, or bushes, only a few birds flying over us in the clear blue sky.
"Dan? It's all ready."
I turn and sit down, looking at all the food we bought. Crisps, sandwiches, Maltesers, salad, and some soda. Phil looks proud of himself, eyeing the whole setup of it all.
"Good job, Phil. It all looks great." I give him a big smile, and it makes him look even happier.
We start to eat, and after a few sandwiches, he starts to talk. "So, uh... I wanted to tell you something, Dan."
"Oh, yeah! What is it?"
He looks down at his hands, like he's trying to decide if he wants to tell me or not. He takes my hands in his, rubbing circles on my palm.
"This thing, it runs in my family. And, it may affect our relationship, so in case you want to back down before this goes any further, I want to tell you this."
He pauses, and looks at me, waiting for me to tell him to continue. I nod, holding his hands tighter.
"My grandfather, on my mum's side, had leukemia. He died after they found it, a month later. It was too late, they couldn't do anything to help him."
I feel tears welling up in my eyes, and I have a feeling that I know where this is going.
He looks up into the bright sky, squinting at the sun. He takes one of his hands and pets my cheek, continuing his story.
"I found out-" His voice cracks, and his eyes fill with tears. He blinks them away, patting the blanket. "I found out, a couple months ago. I have leukemia."
I feel my heart shatter, and it's as if the whole world turns grey. All light fades from the sky, and everything seems black and white. Tears fall onto my cheeks, and I fall over into the grass.
"Dan please." Phil says, crawling over to lay by me. "Please listen." He chokes out, tears staining his own cheeks as well.
"What?" I manage to say.
He picks me up, placing my head in his lap. He messes with my hair, taking in the sadness in my expression. "They don't know how long I have left, but I want to spend the rest of that time with you."
"Phil, I'm never going to leave you."
He smiles weakly, and gives me a little peck on the cheek. "Dan, I love you."
I feel warmth spread throughout my body, and it seems as though the skies gain a bit of their color back. He loves me back, he feels the same!
"I love you too!" I almost shout, pulling his face down to mine for a passionate kiss. I feel him smile, and he lays down next to me. His hands go under my shirt, pulling me even closer to him.
We lie in the soft grass, kissing and talking for hours. The food sits on the blanket next to us, most of it untouched. But that's okay. All I want to do is be with Phil for his few remaining days.
