Yerin peaked her head into the vision of the boy that was occupied, focusing on the board in front of him. Her sudden appearance making him jolt up slightly, but he calmed down once he noticed it was nobody other than Yerin.
"Do you need something?" Jake asked with a smile forming on his face, brightening the already bright and cheerful atmosphere.
Yerin's small smile slowly faded and turned into an apologetic one. The sudden change made the boy panic internally since he didn't know if he said something or did something wrong.
"I got a call from my mother asking me to come home. I'm sorry..I told you I was going to help you." Yerin explained with a sad smile on her face. She really wanted to help him, especially since she told him she would do so.
Jake's expression didn't change, he just smiled, reassuring Yerin that everything was okay and that she did nothing wrong.
"You're sorry about that?" Jake asked in a teasing manner, stepping closer to the girl he was reassuring, "Yerin, it's okay. There's nothing to apologize for."
Yerin slowly started to smile with her dimples showing, making Jake's heart start doing cartwheels.
"I'll make it up to you. Bye bye!" Yerin bear hugged Jake and quickly ran out, making her way out of school grounds since she didn't want to keep her mother waiting.
Yerin stopped in her tracks when she noticed a familiar figure standing by a tree. He was staring at his phone, scrolling through it, completely forgetting about his surroundings.
"Seojoon?" Yerin thought to herself, but her thoughts came to an abrupt end when she got a text from her mother. Telling her to hurry to the house since she really needs help right now.
Yerin completely forgot about Seojoon and started running to the nearest bus stop. Not wanting to keep her mother waiting any longer.
Jake on the other hand, was walking out of school grounds, but made a sudden stop in his tracks when he saw Seojoon standing beside a tree. Seemingly waiting for him.
"Seojoon? What are you doing?" Jake's voice made Seojoon's attention turn to him instead of the small electronic device in his hand. Seojoon turned off his phone and looked at his innocent friend, "I was obviously waiting for you."
"Why?" Jake asked in complete disbelief and disappointment. He was disappointed because Seojoon could've just texted him, not only that, why was Seojoon even waiting for him in the first place?
The two didn't plan to hang out today. So what could possibly be the reason as to why his friend was waiting for him patiently?
"I need to talk to you. Let's go to the dog park."
___
The two teenage boys played with the dogs while talking to each other. One topic after another, the two laughed and had fun with the dogs and each other.
But the mood completely changed when the name "Yerin" was brought into their conversation.
"What about Yerin?" Jake asked while petting the dog sitting with him, secretly hoping his friend wouldn't ask or say anything stupid.
"Jake, I like her."
"What." Jake thought to himself. He found himself completely off-guard and dumbfounded by his friends words. His heart even slowly started to break, and a very small part of him was burning with rage.
The reason for the heartbreak and rage, he didn't know.
"I like her. I like her a lot." Seojoon continued, not allowing Jake to put a single word in. "And I want to ask you this.."
Jake couldn't help but think, what was Seojoon going to ask? Does Seojoon want him to stay away from Yerin? Or something else?
"Can you..somehow..make her like me back?"
Jake didn't want to say yes, but he also didn't want to disappoint or hurt his friend. For some reason, Jake didn't want Yerin to like Seojoon back. He didn't want that, he didn't want that at all.
Of course, being the oblivious teenage boy he is, he didn't know why.
There was a silence between the two for what felt like centuries. Jake was conflicted about his answer. His heart or brain weren't telling him which option he should go for. Not even his instincts were working.
This decision was all up to Jake himself.
He slowly turned to Seojoon, who was patiently waiting for an answer for the past couple of centuries,
"I'll do it."
How much Jake regretted that decision the moment he said it. But it made him happy seeing his friends eyes and smile light up like a bunch of fireworks. But behind that happy smile, was someone who deeply regretted the decision. He regretted accepting.
His heart was slowly breaking, the thought of losing Yerin to his friend kept going into his mind. It kept repeating itself, to the point where Jake had to hit his head to stop his thoughts for a couple of seconds.
___
"Jake? Are you okay? You seem off." Yerin peaked her head into the boy's vision, worry was written all over her face. Her expression softened and her lips turned into a frown.
She looked at the boy in front of her, the boy was clearly not focusing on his tutoring session, the boy who had small dark circles under his eyes.
To think a small decision like that could turn someone into this overnight.
Jake slowly turned his head to Yerin and let out a weak smile, "Yeah. I'm fine. I just didn't get much sleep."
"What a liar." Yerin went closer to Jake's face and examined his expression. His smile faded and his expression turned into a tired one. Jake was not himself today, and Yerin knew that for sure.
Obviously he was tired, she knew that. But she also knew there was more to it.
Yerin took the chalk out of Jake's hands and looked at the students he was tutoring, "You guys can go home early. Have a safe trip home."
All the students started packing while Jake looked at Yerin with an upset look, "Why did you do that?!" He asked, his tone clearly showing he was upset that Yerin just ended the session out of nowhere.
Yerin didn't bother to listen to him. She dropped the chalk and picked up both her bag and Jake's bag, throwing her bag on her shoulder, and carrying Jake's bag by putting it in the front of her stomach.
Luckily for her, both bags were very light.
Yerin gently took Jake's hand and started making her way out of the school, all the way to the bus stop.
Once the two made it into the bus, Yerin told Jake to sit down next to her. She decided to let Jake take the window seat since it's a nice spot to take a quick power nap in.
The boy was quickly knocked out, and he placed his head on Yerin's shoulder.
Yerin glanced at the boy's face, examining and admiring his features. Her cheeks slowly turning pink.
The girl whispered to the sleeping boy who was sleeping on her shoulder,
"You should really stop overworking yourself."
